What is the TEF exam?

(1) Introduction to TEF

1. Why is French knowledge tested?

In order to better assess the actual French proficiency of many college students who want to study in France, the French Embassy in China, with the assistance of the Alliance Fran?aise Experimental School, has implemented the French Proficiency Test since June 2000 ( TEF).

All college students who want to study in France, including French major graduates, need to take the TEF exam.

TEF scores, like the study plan, along with the registration certificate and consulate certification documents, are part of the materials for applying for a visa. The scores in this test are also of interest to companies recruiting French-speaking collaborators.

2.What is TEF?

This is a test method developed by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It measures candidates' ability to use French to reflect their culture through a transitional ladder from beginner level to advanced level (from 0 to 900 points, divided into 7 scoring levels, corresponding to the 6 reference levels determined by the European Commission) Knowledge and professionalism. This test can accurately evaluate the French level of the test taker. TEF scores are valid for one year.

3. The structure of TEF

TEF consists of two parts of the test:

3 required items:

-Reading Comprehension ( 1 hour)

-Listening and listening test (40 minutes)

-Vocabulary and structure (30 minutes)

All college students who intend to study in France need to take the compulsory exams.

4. Required test items

The three required test items include a total of 150 test questions. Each question has multiple answer choices. The test questions for each project are from simple to complex, with gradually increasing difficulty. The exam time is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

⑴ Reading Comprehension Section

Group A: 10 test questions

Purpose: Identify a document (recognize the category, function, and source of the reading comprehension questions) .

Article categories: text messages, advertisements, product instructions, postcards, etc.

Group B: 25 questions

Purpose: Accurately understand various documents (determine the author's intentions, arguments, implications, style, and language style).

Article categories: graphics, news on everyday topics, professional letters.

Group C: 10 questions

Purpose: Understand the organizational structure and logical relationship of an article.

Article categories: articles with loopholes, articles with confusing logic.

Group D: 5 questions

Purpose: Understand the general meaning of a sentence.

Article category: Use multiple sentence patterns to express the same meaning.

⑵ Listening and speaking test part

Group A: 8 questions

Purpose: Use spoken language to explain the content of the picture.

Document categories: Conversations, Advertisements, Stories, Anecdotes.

B: 26 test questions

Purpose: To understand text messages (to determine the general context of communication).

File categories: messages, notices, short messages, etc. on the telephone answering machine.

Group C: 16 questions

Purpose: To understand long letters (to determine the intention, opinions, feelings and expressed attitude of the communication).

Document categories: radio debate excerpts, dialogue summaries, reporter interview clips, drama reviews, etc.

Group D: 10 questions

Purpose: Recognize and identify sounds.

Document Category: Short Sentences.

⑶ Vocabulary and structure

Group A: 10 test questions

Purpose: To understand vocabulary knowledge and understand a sentence.

Test type: short sentences.

Group B: 5 questions

Purpose: Understand the meaning of a word.

Test category: Essays with underlined words that should be replaced.

Group C: 20 questions

Purpose: knowledge of grammatical structures.

Question category: Isolated sentences.

Group D: 5 questions

Purpose: The ability to understand the details of an article and find grammatical errors.

Test category: Essays with grammatical errors.

5. Scoring

For each question, college students can choose between two, four, or five possible answers, but only one answer is correct. The scoring criteria are as follows:

0 point for canceled answer

1 point for wrong answer

6. Who will organize the TEF exam

The matters of applying for and passing the TEF exam are handled by each Alliance Fran?aise experimental school. Organization and management will be carried out according to the jurisdiction of the different consulates to which candidates belong.

2- You must have your own email address so that the CELA website can contact you as soon as possible.

3- You must have a CELA registration number. If not, please register now.

4- Go to your personal page.

5- Fill out the registration form and select your exam session to complete your pre-registration. Once you select an exam session, you cannot change your selection.

6- Pay the registration fee immediately and return to your personal page to fill in the payment form.

7- Once your remittance is confirmed, your choice of exam session will also be confirmed. You will receive confirmation of your exam session selection on your profile page.

8- Please collect your admission ticket through your personal page about 10 days before the exam. The specific date, time and location of the exam will be stated on the admission ticket.

9- Please print your admission ticket and attach a recent 2-inch color photo on it.

10- On the day of the exam, please bring your admission ticket and ID card and arrive at the exam venue on time.

11- Exam results will be notified to you via your personal page.

What is TEF Examination?

The French Proficiency Test TEF is an exam officially recognized by the French Ministry of Education. It mainly tests the candidate's French written and oral understanding and expression abilities.

Those who study French can use this test to summarize their abilities and prove their language proficiency. Therefore, everyone who wants to show their French proficiency, whether for study or work reasons, can take this exam.

The French proficiency test includes three required items: oral comprehension, written comprehension, structure and vocabulary.

Each item is worth 300 points, and the total of the three items is 900 points.

Is the TEF exam relevant to me?

What fees do I need to pay?

The registration fee for the TEF exam is RMB 800, excluding bank fees. You can pay by transfer to Bank of China. For specific operation methods, please follow the requirements you saw when registering.

What is the use of the TEF test score certificate?

TEF test scores reflect your French proficiency. It helps you or recruiters from French companies and universities to better understand your French level. As a reminder, if you want to study in France, your TEF scores will be reviewed by the interview center evaluators.

Do I have to pass TEF before I can go for CELA interview?

No. Once you have received the notice for the TEF exam, you can sign up for the interview. However, your test scores will be checked by evaluators.

When will you know the results?

Examination results will be announced within one month.

(5) CELA interview introduction

The Language and Academic Assessment Interview (CELA) is an interview with French university teachers and French business people in China and Asia, lasting about 15 minutes. .

During the interview process, students who wish to study in France will be evaluated in the following areas:

(6) How to register for CELA interview

To make an appointment to participate in the evaluation interview, you must:

1. Have a CELA registration number. If you haven't already, please register now.

2. Go to your personal webpage to register for evaluation.

3. Pay the registration fee of RMB 1,500 (excluding bank fees). You can go to any Bank of China to handle payment procedures according to the instructions during registration. Please check your personal page for detailed steps.

Students who receive EIFFEL scholarship or French government scholarship do not need to pay the registration fee.

4. Please send us copies of all your materials via post office.

5. Carefully check the evaluation interview time on your personal webpage and confirm. If this time is not suitable for you due to some special reasons, please contact us and we will suggest another time for you.

6. Print and present your interview notice on the day of the interview. You must also provide us with original copies of all materials. If you miss your appointment for some reason, you can make another appointment, but you must pay a penalty of RMB 300.

5- College entrance examination transcript (if you do not have a higher education diploma )

6- Chinese university admission notice

7- University semester scores and higher education academic certificates

8- Recent student ID card (if you are Current students)

9- Proof of French learning (at least 500 hours) (or proof of English learning if you are enrolled in an English course)

10- Proof of TEF test scores within one year ( Or admission ticket)

For students registered for English courses: one of IELTS, TOEFL, and CET scores within one year

11- Work certificate (if you have work experience)

At the end of the interview, you will receive a certificate issued by CELA. When you submit your application at the visa office, you will need to show proof of your interview.

Under normal circumstances, CELA will send you a notice to go to the visa office the next day (or the next working day). Once your visa application is sent to the visa office, you will receive a response within 8 days.

Do I need to attend a language and academic assessment interview?

All Chinese nationals, or students of any nationality other than French living in China who want to study in France, must pass a language and academic assessment interview.

When to register?

Due to the large number of students who sign up for interviews, we recommend that you sign up as early as possible, at least three months in advance of your expected departure date.
