During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xiaotangshan was turned into a forbidden place for feudal emperors to travel around the world. Emperor Qianlong built Tangquan Palace here, and wrote the inscription "Jiuhua Xixiu". The bath ruins of Empress Dowager Cixi still exist today. In Xiaotangshan Sanatorium, the handwriting of the former site of Cixi Bathroom and the imperial pen "Jiuhua Xixiu" written by Qianlong is preserved. Tangshan Park was built in the Republic of China, and was devastated by war during the Anti-Japanese War. After the founding of New China, Xiaotangshan sanatorium was built here, and Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other party and state leaders visited here many times. When Guo Moruo, a great writer, visited Xiaotangshan, he improvised a poem "Nian Nu Jiao Yong Xiaotangshan this spring".
