There are three different ways to practice visual translation:
1) Students hold the lecture notes, read silently, and read the translation aloud coherently, without too much hesitation and pause.
2) The cooperators and students will hold a lecture respectively. The former reads the manuscript aloud, and the latter translates what the speaker said to the manuscript softly according to the reading speed and rhythm of the former.
3) After the above exercises are skillfully completed, the cooperators deliberately deviate from the lecture notes in the reading process, improvise appropriately, and set obstacles for the students' listening and reading process, and the students will all improvise translation.
In the initial stage of visual translation practice, students should read the speech carefully first, and then translate it after removing the barriers of understanding and language. After a period of adaptation, students should gradually reduce the preparation time before translation, and finally be able to interpret when they pick up the lecture notes. When doing visual translation exercises, students' voices should not be drowned out by their collaborators' voices, otherwise they will not be able to hear Qingyuan language and keep up with the rhythm of the speaker. Different from shadow practice and countdown practice, sight-reading practice is not only an effective means of simultaneous interpretation training, but also a real way of interpretation, because "at international conferences held in China, about 90% of speakers have speeches, at least an outline." Although visual translation practice is a real form of interpretation, it is still different from simultaneous interpretation.
1) simultaneous interpretation requires the interpreter to listen to the conference speech in the simultaneous interpretation box and convey the oral translation to the audience through the microphone; However, when students do visual translation exercises, they often can't do this because of the limitation of equipment conditions.
2) Visual translation training enables the interpreter to obtain the source language information through text and image stimulation, while simultaneous interpretation enables the interpreter to identify and understand the meaning and emotion of the source language through sound stimulation, so visual translation training is still different from simultaneous interpretation in working methods.
3) The visual translation practice of listening, watching and translating at the same time caters to China's habit of converting sound symbols into words before understanding their meaning when learning a foreign language; At the same time, because words and images stimulate the human brain longer than voice, translators are easily disturbed by the word order and sentence structure of the source language when doing visual translation exercises, and it is difficult to quickly get out of the shell of the source language and conduct "interpretative translation" advocated by the French hermeneutics school. However, there are many similarities between visual translation practice and simultaneous interpretation:
1) Visual translation requires that the output of the target language should be synchronized with the release of the source language. Therefore, after listening to a speech, an interpreter can't make a big adjustment to the word order of the source language according to the expression habits of the target language before giving a translation. He can only translate what he hears and sees according to the sentence order of the source language pronunciation. In addition, due to the time limit, the translator can't make too many modifications and supplements to the newly released target language, and must try his best to make the output of the target language take shape at one time. This is very similar to simultaneous interpretation.
2) Due to the limitation of time, in order to deal with binaural listening, information prediction, sentence breaking, trial translation, reorganization, release, error correction, monitoring and other tasks of the target language at the same time, both eyes, ears and mouth must be used; At the same time, the translator should use the skills of reasoning, generalization, explanation, displacement, addition, deletion and repetition flexibly to ensure the smooth output of the target language.
3) Through the practice of visual translation, after receiving the task of interpretation, students learn to analyze the speech carefully, accumulate subject knowledge through targeted reading, remove the obstacles of understanding and terminology that may be encountered in the process of interpretation, and make preparations for the translation of the speech as early as possible (at least, make a good draft of the translation) in order to achieve better translation results. This process is very similar to the pre-translation preparation of simultaneous interpretation.
