The award is divided into eight categories: birds, mammals, other animals, plants and fungi, landscape, underwater world, man and nature, nature's studio, and champion. Besides, young photographers can be divided into two categories: below 14 and between 15- 17.

A series of photographs including snails, otters, owls and cheetahs all won prizes in the competition.

From June 5438 to 10, 2007, a cheetah who escaped from the fire stopped to watch the photographer. This black and white photo was taken by London photographer Brita; Photographed by Jasche Enski, won the 20 10 European Wildlife Photography Competition.

In a statement, Jasche Enski recalled the shooting process of this photo. He said: "A forest fire razed most areas, and many large black locust trees were burned in the fire. Suddenly, a cheetah appeared on the charred grassland. For' big cats', the fire undoubtedly brought them good luck, because their prey had nowhere to hide because of the fire. However, this cheetah seems to be homeless, like a ghost. I picked up the camera and took this photo, and then watched it slowly disappear on the charred prairie. "
