Appreciation of the works of Ming Dynasty Dai Jinchun Mountain Accumulating Green Pictures

This painting is one of the few remaining paintings of the author that has a date that can be verified. It is an important representative work for studying the evolution of Dai Jin's painting style. The layout adopts the Southern Song Dynasty [courtyard style] formula, using diagonal truncated composition to express the three levels of near, middle and far scenery, which is bright and concise. The mountains in the middle and long shots are cut from outside the painting, crossing each other on the left and right, forming an S-shaped curve when combined with the close shots. The close-up view of the pine trees twisting and bending at the foot of the mountain, as well as the old man and book boy walking on the mountain path are very similar to the scene in Ma Yuan's "One Corner". The painting method of pine trees has the flavor of "dragging branches and horses far away", which shows that the author was deeply influenced by the "courtyard style" of the Southern Song Dynasty. The rocks are cleft with a small ax and dotted with moss, but his brushwork has broken through the simple and rigorous painting style of Ma and Xia, showing a light and relaxed style. The inscription is [On the first day of the Yuan Dynasty when Zhengtong was born, Dai Wenjin of Qiantang wrote the preface to the deed of the picture of accumulating greenery in the spring mountains], with the seals of [Wen Jin] and [Jing'an] Zhu Wen. This picture was painted in the 14th year of Zhengtong (AD 1449), when the author was 62 years old. It was once collected by Liu Shu in the Qing Dynasty and Pang Yuanji in modern times.

"Spring Mountains Accumulating Green Pictures" typically represents the evolution of Dai Jin's painting style in his middle and late period. When this picture was taken, Dai Jin, the leader of the "Zhejiang faction", was already in dire straits and could no longer find a foothold in the capital, so he had no choice but to "beg for food and return south, not only to return money to Qiantang, but also to pay for the customary order to be detained on the roof of the office, so he fled into the mountains of Yuhang. There is always someone who can look for someone." Paintings such as spring mountains covered with greenery and hidden soil carrying a musical instrument can only express the depression of not achieving one's ambitions, revisit the old dream of "getting the name Haiyu", and express the attachment to the natural scenery. The inscription of this picture is "The orthodox Dai Wenjin of Qiantang in the Yuan Dynasty wrote the preface to the picture of accumulating green mountains in the spring mountains", and the seals are "Wenjin" and "Jing'an".
