Focus mode

Sony miniature cameras have four autofocus modes:

①AF-S: When the shutter is half pressed, the camera performs 1 focusing. After focusing successfully, there are prompt icons and prompt sounds. Keep the shutter half pressed, move the camera or change the focal length, and the camera will not refocus. Suitable for shooting still objects, such as scenery, architecture, still life and other themes.

②AF-C: When the shutter is half pressed, the camera stays in focus. After focusing successfully, there is a prompt icon, and there is no prompt sound. Keep the shutter half pressed, move the camera or change the focal length, and the camera will refocus. Suitable for shooting moving objects, such as sports and animals.

③AF-A: When the shutter is half pressed, the camera will automatically select AF-S or AF-C according to the situation of the subject. It should be noted that if the camera has been focused with a single focus, the subject will move again before the shutter is fully pressed for shooting, and it will not automatically switch to continuous focus at this time.

④DMF (Full-time Manual Focus): It is basically the same as AF-S, except that we can manually rotate the focus ring to adjust the focal length before the camera finishes focusing, but before the shutter is fully pressed for shooting. Suitable for macro, close-up and other subjects with shallow depth of field, so that the focus position is more in line with our shooting intention.

Focused area

Sony micro camera has no fixed focus, so we can autofocus anywhere in the whole picture area. It has four automatic partition modes:

① Center: Focus with the center one.

② Free point: users can freely choose the focus position. The size of the focus area can be selected for A7 and later products, including large (L), medium (M) and small (S).

③ Zone: The user can choose the focus position freely, and the camera will automatically choose the focus position among 3×3 focuses (large size).

④ Wide area: The camera will automatically select the focus position. Points in focus at the same time mean that these objects reach the camera at the same distance.

Sony micro-cameras are all focused with photosensitive elements. According to different detection methods, it can be divided into contrast detection and phase/contrast detection. Among the products with phase/contrast detection, A5 100 and A6000 have reached the technical level of 4D focusing, and have the best AF performance among Sony micro-cameras.

Advanced autofocus

① Located in the custom settings menu, the default setting is off. Set to off, the camera will only focus automatically when the shutter is half pressed. Set to On, the camera will continue to focus after detecting a scene change. This function will consume more power, but it can avoid large defocus.

②AF/MF switching

③NEX-7, A6000 and A7 cameras have a dedicated AF/MF button, and other cameras can specify custom buttons.

④ Set to AF/MF control hold, and switch between AF and MF temporarily when pressed. For example, if the current setting is AF, press and hold the key to switch to MF, and release the key to return to AF. Can be used as the focus lock button in AF-C.
