Disadvantages of diffuse reflection

Making good use of diffuse reflection of light is a compulsory course of light control in photography, which is more suitable for portrait photography.

First of all, let's learn about the light sources and lighting methods used in photography. Light sources can be divided into natural light and artificial light sources, and the lighting methods include front light, back light, side light and top light. At the same time, the light is strong and weak, cold and warm, and the reflection will have color. Therefore, the understanding and application of light directly affects our photographic works.

Diffuse reflection is a phenomenon that light is projected on a rough surface and reflected in all directions. That is to say, the advantage of diffuse reflection is that it can weaken, soften and scatter relatively hard, intense and direct light. This is a good way to realize diffuse reflection of light when encountering imperfect light sources such as strong light and direct light.

I take portrait photography as an example. Diffuse reflection light is soft, especially suitable for portrait or private photography, and the best reflection is natural light. Therefore, in actual shooting, the most common thing is to use the outside sunlight and then use the window screen to diffuse the light, thus creating a soft light environment, which is why many photographers like to shoot portraits under the window screen.

In fact, not only the gauze curtain can play the role of diffuse reflection, but also the rough reflective surface facing the direction of incident light can create soft light. The reflector used in our shooting can not only supplement the light, but also create a certain diffuse reflection; When shooting in a private house, the sheets on the bed should be white, and the diffuse light can gently set off the skin color of the model. Moreover, color plates are easy to cause light and color pollution.

In fact, indoor carpets, bedding and walls, as long as they are not absolutely smooth, such as mirrors, are excellent diffuse reflection surfaces. Therefore, the indoor colors of portraits and private houses must not be too messy, otherwise it will cause great inconvenience to natural light or lighting.
