The difference between the two paintings Scream and Haystacks

There is a big difference between the Scream and Haystack paintings. The materials of "The Scream" are different. It is said that the wooden plank bridge in the painting is in a small park by the Oslo Bay. Today, modern people have regarded "The Scream" as the "Mona Lisa" of today, because it so vividly expresses the helplessness and panic of people's spiritual world.

The 1893 "The Scream", which was completed in oil, egg tempera, and crayon at the same time, is the most recognized. There is a hand-drawn sketch on the back of the canvas, so experts recommend this work as the earliest completed work.

In the same year of 1893, another crayon painting called "The Scream" had quite different colors. The strokes were continuous lines and much tougher. The painting is very faded, as if a "Haijie Diary" type filter effect was added to the beautiful picture show, which is somewhat Japanese style. More like an immature draft. You can imagine Munch in his huge studio with a lighted patio, imagining this work in his mind while selecting the colored crayons at hand.

The 1895 lithograph "The Scream" is in black and white. It is said that Munch printed 45 copies from the original version, and he also selected a few to color it himself. But I haven't seen a colored print. The lines are clearer and the characters' expressions are more vivid.

The crayon cardboard "The Scream" from 1895 has brighter colors than the previous draft. It is the most vivid one, and the characters are more detailed. There are two people in the background. One of them is bent over the bridge railing and leaning on his arms, seeming to be looking at the scenery in the distance. This is different from the others. In 2012, the painting was auctioned at Sotheby's for $120 million.

In 1910, after selling the 1893 version of the oil painting "The Scream", Munch made this tempera painting "The Scream". It should be said that this is the most "scary" picture. The eyes are hollow, the face is painted more green, and the body is like a ghost.

Munch probably did not expect that his image creation would become a classic symbol of popular culture, appearing in cultural shirts, coffee mugs, horror movies and social apps.
