Colored lead evaluation

I prefer painting flowers and succulents, which may be relatively simple for those who are self-taught with zero foundation - there is no need to consider too much perspective, light and dark contrast, etc., so I rarely paint landscape works.

But when I saw Feileniao’s new book "Poetry and Distance: An Introduction to Colored Pencils for Healing Landscape Painting" published in 2019, I was attracted by this postcard-style colored pencil work!

This book does not focus on complex content and colored pencil techniques, but it has a "breath of life" and a relaxing feeling. For me, who doesn’t need to take exams and just study on my own based on my interest, painting becomes less stressful. In the process of painting, I also start to yearn for the beauty of these scenery.

This is my first landscape work! Also share the highlights and difficulties of this book with your friends who are self-taught with colored pencils!

Note: Most of the pictures were taken by me with my mobile phone, and there may be color differences~

This book has three series, using Staedtler water-soluble 48 colors, as follows. Different from the traditional realistic style, the colored pencil works in this book are all illustration-style, which is more typical of Japanese style.

Although the work is simple, it does not mean that the work is rough. From the color matching, theme, and pictures, they are all very literary and artistic postcards.

1. Scenery along the way: mainly natural scenery, such as snow-capped mountains, deserts, morning light, etc., and the names of the works are also very stylish, like the one I painted is called "A ray of morning light".

2. Walking in the city: It is easy to understand from the name, it is the scenery of the city. The scenery selected in this book is relatively peaceful and distant, which makes people suddenly feel at ease from the usual irritability of traffic jams and subway crowds.

3. Childhood memories: I think it is more about depicting some scenery in nature when I was a child, which is somewhat similar to the first theme.

The presentation of each work in the book is like a postcard, which can open up your thoughts after you finish the work, instead of just putting it away after you finish it.

For those who are self-taught with colored pencils, painting will be more fun, and what I like most are the works with a more Chinese style!

There is an overall composition introduction before the beginning of each work, which is very important for landscape colored pencils! And learning to compose is also helpful for landscape photography~

At the same time, it will also zoom in on some local details to explain how to draw, which I think is lacking in many colored pencil tutorials!

This is very important for people who are self-taught with colored pencils from scratch. Learning to draw inferences from one case to another can help you advance quickly, otherwise you will have to rely on tutorials.

This book focuses on the fact that the work can be completed by flat painting, but I personally think that the characteristic of colored pencils is that it is inconvenient for flat painting. Therefore, many painters will use toner, watercolor, and marker pens to lay down the base color quickly, and on the other hand, it will be even.

This tutorial basically requires a large area of ??background color. If the novice’s line arrangement ability is weak, the final picture may appear messy and the color blocks will be unevenly distributed. Therefore, if friends who are weak in line arrangement want to draw works in this book, it is recommended to use color powder to complete the layout of the background color and improve the completion rate of the work.

In addition, if you are good at arranging lines, it is recommended not to draw too large a size. It is easy to make the color uneven if the background color is too large~

In general, this Although this colored pencil tutorial will not be my main copying object (I still like plants more), when I have to stay at home most of the time now, painting some outside scenery can really relieve my worries about having to go out.
