Golden section technique in photography
When people appreciate an image work, the significance of the golden section rule lies in providing a reasonable geometric line segment. For many painters/artists, "golden section" is a guiding principle that they must deeply understand in their current creation, and photographers are no exception.
The ancient golden section is a theory, and the geometric formula is complicated. How can it be used in photography? After countless times of analysis in photography, later generations simplified the golden section and got the theory of "nine-square grid composition" The basic principle of Jiugongge composition is what we often call the "trisection", that is, the picture is divided into three equal parts horizontally and vertically. The Jiugongge of Jiugongge is the whole picture divided by these intersecting lines, so the composition of Jiugongge is also called "well"-shaped composition, and the intersection of four lines is usually the best advantage for placing the subject, which is more vivid than placing it in the center. For beginners, the simplified golden section theory is easier to understand and apply. Now let's look at what the simplified golden section is:
In some cameras, it can also be tuned to display this nine-square grid, which is actually convenient for users to use the golden section theory. Please pay attention to the four points in the middle of the nine squares. As long as we put the subject of photography on one of these four points, we have already used the golden section, and the photos we take will be much more harmonious than putting the protagonist in the middle of the photos. Refer to the following photos:
The photographer puts the face of the protagonist in the photo at the intersection in the upper right corner, which conforms to the golden ratio and makes the photo look comfortable and harmonious.
Let's take a look at the following landscape map: the protagonist's cabin in the photo is placed at the intersection in the lower left corner of the photo, which is also an example of the golden section.
How to choose these four points? I found that photographers usually put the subject on the top right point, but it is not static. In the process of composition practice, we should also consider the characteristics of the subject itself. For example, the placement position is determined according to the orientation of the object. For example, whether the subject is affected by the background, whether the subject sign or decoration can be placed at the intersection, and how to determine the position according to the actual situation of sunlight radiation. In the picture below, the chair is open to the left. At this time, put the chair at the intersection at the lower right, and the overall picture will be more stable and harmonious. The opening direction of the chair is left. At this time, put the chair on the lower right, and the overall picture will appear more stable. When shooting, blur the background slightly, and then match colors to make the subject stand out.
Determine the placement position according to the orientation of the chair.
Finally, the Jiugongge composition method, like other composition methods mentioned later, is only a composition rule that can be followed, not a dead rule. These laws can provide reference for us when shooting, but our creative thinking cannot be limited by them. It is not necessarily better to shoot some subjects with the Jiugongge rule than the picture with the subject in the center, just as we can't stick to putting the subject at the upper right intersection point commonly used in Jiugongge composition. We should find the best composition method according to the actual situation of the subject and the content we want to express, so as to take an exceptionally good photo.
But beginners should make good use of the golden section to practice taking pictures. Although not every photo should use this technique, the golden section is indeed the most basic knowledge of photography, architecture, art and so on. You must master it and practice it well!
