What is the use of camera hood?

The functions of the camera hood are as follows:

1. Protect the imaging light path from stray light interference.

2. Protect the imaging lens (mainly the front lens group) from being damaged by impact.

The lens hood is an accessory installed on the front of the camera lens. Of all the camera accessories, the lens hood is the most easily overlooked, but in fact, its role is far greater than many people know and imagine.

In terms of shape, there are two main types of hoods: "petal-shaped" and "barrel-shaped". The petal-shaped lens hood is also often called the "lotus-shaped" lens hood. The shape, size, and curves of its "petals" are highly targeted and have almost a one-to-one correspondence with the lens. The cylindrical shape mainly caters to the scope of application of the lens model, and has good versatility.

Why use a hood:

1. Block unwanted light.

If you have ever taken photos on a sunny day, it is not difficult to find that the imaging contrast of the photos is not high, the resolution is reduced, and there are even inexplicable light spots, vignetting (ghosting and halos) and other phenomena. .

The lens hood can block some light that does not need to participate in imaging outside the viewing angle of the lens to solve the problem of glare, ghosting, etc. caused by stray light entering the imaging light path of the lens. Problems such as halos and loss of clarity.

So no matter when you are shooting, in what environment, or in what kind of light source, you should maintain the good habit of using a lens hood. Especially when shooting in environments with many and complex light sources, such as exhibition sites, concert stages, bars, etc., you should always wear a lens hood.

2. Prevent collision damage.

For example, if your camera is accidentally dropped, the lens hood will likely be the first part to hit the ground. Even if it breaks, replacing the hood is much cheaper than repairing or replacing the lens.

3. Keep the lens clean.

Professional photographers will use lens hoods when shooting in many harsh environments, such as windy and rainy weather, muddy swamps, windy seaside, bumpy desert slopes, etc.
