Kiev (Ukrainian: ки? в; Russian: ки? ев) is located in north-central Ukraine, in the middle reaches of the Dnieper River. It is the capital, economic and cultural center of Ukraine. Located on both sides of the middle reaches of Dnieper River, near the confluence of Pripyat River and its largest tributary, Jesna River. The city covers an area of 782 square kilometers and has a population of about 2.6 million, which is divided into 10 administrative regions.

National Kiev University is the most famous institution of higher learning. Founded in September 1834, it is the highest institution of higher learning in Ukraine with 20,000 students. In 1950s, many China students studied in Kiev University. 1999, more than 150 China students studied here. Kiev's welfare facilities include comprehensive and specialized hospitals, kindergartens, sanatoriums and children's holiday camps, as well as 1000 libraries, nearly 30 museums and former residences of historical celebrities.

In 822 AD, the first Russian nation-state-Kiev Ross was established in Kiev, Ukraine. In 988, the whole city converted to the Orthodox Church, and gradually prospered through Eurasian trade in the next two centuries.
