Highlights of Yuanmingyuan Lotus Festival

On June 28th, the 24th Yuanmingyuan Lotus Festival opened. After decades of construction, the lotus planting area of Yuanmingyuan in Beijing has reached 1000 mu, with more than 300 varieties. In the next two months, visitors can come to Yuanmingyuan and enjoy the beautiful scenery of summer lotus in the former Summer Palace.

According to the staff, 1 1 ancient lotus seeds were found in the Qingshui Tsukichi pond in the southeast corner of Changchun Garden in Yuanmingyuan. This is the first discovery of ancient lotus seeds since the archaeological excavation of Yuanmingyuan.

At present, these 1 1 ancient lotus seeds have been sent to Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences for scientific management, research and identification. After the exploration, research and cultivation of ancient lotus seeds, the two sides finally decided to date three ancient lotus seeds and carry out cultivation experiments on the remaining eight. According to experts from the Institute of Botany, ancient lotus seeds germinate longer than ordinary lotus seeds and are more difficult to cultivate. Due to the long burial time and the quality problems of the seeds themselves, the survival rate of ancient lotus seeds is reduced.

After monitoring, research and cultivation by experts from Chinese Academy of Sciences, six ancient lotus seeds have successfully germinated after sowing. At the end of August 2008, leaves and lotus roots have grown in experimental flowerpots. At present, these six ancient lotus seeds have successfully wintered in the greenhouse. They were taken out of the greenhouse in April this year and planted in the lotus base, which is expected to bloom this summer.

In addition, this Lotus Festival will show visitors the restoration results of the first phase of "Restoration 1860". Six pieces of fine porcelain after restoration will be exhibited in Yuanmingyuan Exhibition Hall, including 1 blue glazed snuff bottle, 2 pieces of blue-and-white eight treasures Wanfu Ruyi tile, 1 Kangxi blue-and-white dragon bowl, 1 Kangxi red glazed bowl and 1 blue-and-white lotus pattern porcelain embroidery pier. In addition, the second phase of "Restore 1860" will be launched during the Lotus Festival.
