What kind of movie is roadside picnic?
We can put aside those harsh words. Although the roadside picnic was only shown for 10 days, it was the best movie in 20 16 years. Its deconstruction of time surprised the world with a 42-minute long shot.
Bi Gan is very much like directors Jia and Taiwan Province. They all have their own film aesthetic feeling, which is determined by the living environment. The humid and gloomy subtropical environment in Kaili, Bigan's hometown, is like a dream, hazy and easy to separate time and space.
Bi Gan adopted a realistic shooting method, shooting formalism.
I watched this movie twice, but the first time I saw it, I was puzzled. I didn't notice many details, because sometimes I couldn't recognize Bobby Chen because of its photographic flaws. So I gave four stars when I scored. Apart from photography flaws, I also have expectations for the director.

The basis of Bi Gan's films comes from a passage in the Diamond Sutra. A Buddhist friend of mine told me that the so-called "past life experience is not available, this life experience is not available, and the afterlife experience is not available." Its meaning is the essence of time, and it is difficult for you to define it by past, present and future. Through this deconstruction of time, Buddhists can get the idea of letting go. Bi Gan made it into a movie, and Bobby Chen, a doctor and poet, left Kaili and entered the past, present and future, thus completing his farewell to the past.
At the beginning of the film, Bobby Chen chats with the doctor. It is a scrolling shot from right to left, which is often used in the shooting of Carey. In Kaili, time is stagnant or even retrogressive. Rolling from right to left is like a clock painted on the wall by Wei Wei, moving counterclockwise. Carey is a thing of the past, while Bobby Chen is still in the past.
The reason why the film is difficult to understand is that Bi Gan has no intention to explain the relationship between the characters clearly, and the audience guesses in the flashbacks of the past and the present, which leads to the inability to interpret the film in linear time. However, through the images in the film, we can feel the emotional conflict between the characters.
When Bobby Chen and foreigners met for the first time, Bobby Chen used a toy gun to shoot balloons. The appearance of "guns" implied the contradiction between them and hit the target, which paved the way for the underworld in Bobby Chen in the past. From their conversation, we can know that "house" is the root of contradiction.
Continue "Tiger and Diamond Sutra", the film takes poetry as the scene. How about Bi Gan's poems? I don't know. The way to connect with poetry is not only the director's lyrics, but also its shortcomings. The role of poetry in Tiger is to remedy, and the roadside picnic is "suspected".
Bobby Chen chatted with the old doctor in the hospital. Bi Gan changed the traditional shooting method, that is, the usual over-the-shoulder shooting or overhead shooting, but skillfully used the mirror. Later, in filming, he often borrowed the mirror in every conversation. The crooked car has been repaired, and the lens is taken of the mirror on the car. The audience's attention is focused on the world in the mirror, which is a more open environment. Mirror image is a reflection of reality, but it blurs reality because it is too real. Just like the Duke of Zhou dreamed of butterflies, dreams are like the world in the mirror, and people can't tell what is a dream and what is reality in the end.
Weiwei draws clocks and watches on the dim wall. There are many images of time in the movie, and the most wonderful thing is the train. The projection of the train on the wall is from right to left, time to go back, so Bobby Chen dreamed of his mother. Bobby Chen's own sin is that her shoes are floating in the river and there is nothing she can do. This reminds me of "Mother on the River" by Tujia Ye Fu, where people are eager to be buried, and the dream mother's shoes are like duckweed, and Bobby Chen's heart is uneasy.
When the second poem appeared, Bobby Chen was asleep on the sofa. In the camera, the electric fan turns clockwise first, and then counterclockwise. The direction of fan rotation is a reflection of dreams and reality, and it is also a proof of time change.
Before the 42-minute long shot, that is, in Kaili, there was a long shot showing Bi Gan's control of time and superb scheduling. This shot starts from the follow-up. In the past, Bobby Chen avenged the monk's son and then rolled it on the glass. The ticking sound of water drops is like a clock, which makes the audience feel the passage of time. However, the camera keeps scrolling to the left, and now it is a dispute between Bobby Chen and foreigners. A lens connects the past and the present, which is definitely a precedent in my viewing.
Chen Sheng got on the train with the old doctor's things and went to Zhenyuan. On the train, he fell asleep, so he went back in time, or it was one of his dreams. After he got out of prison, he was driving, with four minutes of long shots and blues. There was a fog ahead, and he couldn't tell whether it was a dream or reality, and the prospect was not good. A voice-over illustrates the general situation. Bobby Chen spent seven years in prison. After he came out, his mother and wife had died. The guilt in his heart kept him stuck in the past, unable to walk out of the fog and go back.
Trains are like transit stations of time, connecting the present, the past and the future. This is reflected in The Matrix, and the transit station to the real and online world is the train.
After the play began, there was a 42-minute long shot. During this linear time, Bi Gan adopted a realistic shooting method, and we followed the camera. The time in the movie is synchronized with the real time, but in the end we are told that the present, the past and the future exist here at the same time.

Wei Wei still likes to draw watches when she grows up and is bullied by her peers. Bobby Chen saved him, opened his motorcycle and took him to eat bean jelly. When he was a teenager, he met an alcoholic who once killed someone with his car. At this time, all this has not happened. He still loves drinking, but he didn't kill the old doctor's son.
He met his wife at Macy's. Instead of dying, she opened a barber shop and got married. After seeing a man who is very similar to his wife, Bobby Chen picked up the clothes given by the old doctor and put them on. He went to her shop for a haircut, told his story and cried. He said that his wife wanted to see the sea, and women also said that they wanted to see the sea. He took the woman as his wife, so he turned off the light and shone a flashlight on her hand, including the song "Little Jasmine" he sang for the woman later, which was the most romantic thing he had ever done to his wife. He said goodbye to a woman and completed his redemption.
In Zhenyuan, he found the old monk. At this time, fans and clocks appeared in the camera, and the world became clear. After breaking with the past, Bobby Chen put it down and returned to reality. The old doctor's lover has passed away, and the farewell tape was taken by Bobby Chen to bid farewell to the past.
On the way to Mai, Bobby Chen sat on the train, and the wheels of another train were reflected on the glass, turning counterclockwise like a clock. I am in a trance. Did he really say goodbye to the past?
Bi Gan had a dream, and the audience and Chen Sheng were in a trance.
The long shot in the film is not so much interpreted as the perspective of God as the perspective of "savage" that has never appeared in the film. Because there is no sense of separation when watching, God's perspective is not accurate. "Savage" said from the beginning, past, present and future that he wandered on the time line and was out of control of time. He was different from God and participated in time.
I always think of Goodbye South and South China directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, whether it is the lens or the music, which may be the reason for using Lin Qiang. However, "Picnic by the Road" is more groundbreaking than "Picnic by the Road", and the timeline of Jia's "The Possible Departure of Mountains and Rivers" is also past, present and future, but it is not as good as Bi Gan.
In fact, there has always been a bizarre idea after reading it. Maybe the old doctor is a woman who washes her hair with wheat. Bobby Chen shone a flashlight on her hand, and Bobby Chen gave her the tape on the clothes made by the old doctor. Moreover, the old lady in Carey opened a clinic and asked Bobby Chen to go to Zhenyuan to find a lover. It seems that this makes sense.
Bi Gan said in an interview that the film has many flaws because of financial problems, and the new film to be filmed next will get enough investment and will do better.
I have great expectations for this. At present, I am looking forward to two new directors in China, one is Teacher Xu Haofeng and the other is Bi Gan.
