During his decades of educational career, Mr. Xia paid attention to scientific practice, and he practiced it. Whether it is hot or cold, he often observes astronomical data until late at night. This down-to-earth scientific research style and meticulous work attitude set a brilliant example for teachers and students, and created a school spirit of respecting work and pursuing innovation.

During his teaching in Tsinghua University, Mr. Xia devoted himself to the study and research of surveying and mapping science. Write applied astronomy from 1929. All the strength in the book is the result of his personal practice. It is the earliest astrometry textbook in China, published in 1933. Subsequently, he co-authored the Road Maintenance Project with Chen Yongling and published it in 1935. The examples in the book were also obtained from his investigation of the six major railways in China in several winter and summer vacations.

After Xia, Mr. and Mr. Wang returned to China in the autumn of 1939, they were deeply impressed by the lack of surveying textbooks and reference books. In order to solve this problem, they contacted each other and agreed to compile a series of universities for surveying. The first book, Surveying Adjustment Methods, was published by the Commercial Press, 1947. Later 1949, the Commercial Press published the university series Aerial Photogrammetry, 195 1 year, the Commercial Press published the university series Geodesy, 1953, and the Commercial Press published the university series Practical Astronomy. After liberation, this set of books came out one after another, which made up for the shortage of surveying and mapping textbooks in China, promoted the development of surveying and mapping education and surveying and mapping career in New China, and was deeply loved by surveying and mapping workers.

From 65438 to 0963, the first and second volumes of Earth Astronomy edited by Mr. Xia were published. This is the earliest work on earth astronomy in China. It is not only a good textbook, but also a valuable reference book. With this book, the quality of teaching and production has been significantly improved. 1965 Xia Editor-in-Chief published "Inspection and Application of Universal Theodolite". This is the first book about the omnidirectional theodolite T4 in China. The contents of the book closely combine the requirements of geodesy in China, which not only guides how to do geodesy well, but also tells us why to do it. This book is the scientific research achievement of Mr. Xia and others. Its content is unique and practical, and it is the companion of earth astronomy. These two books are deeply loved by geodetic workers and have played an important role in improving the professional quality of geodetic workers in China.
