How to avoid overexposure of flash when shooting?

When we shoot indoors or when the light is dim, we always use a flash to fill the light. However, if we shoot with a flash, the photos will be unsightly, because if we don't handle them properly, there will be overexposure, which is especially serious for digital cameras. So many friends always say "Don't use the flash when taking pictures", but this often leads to blurred images, so we don't want to use the flash properly.

Generally speaking, the effect of shooting with natural light is the most natural, but when the environment does not allow, we can also use flash as the second light source or auxiliary light source, and its function is to fill the shortage of natural light. If the photographer uses the flash as the main light source, the image looks very unnatural unless he wants to shoot special effects. So photographers should pay attention to fill the light when using the flash.

It is easy to overexpose when using a flash to shoot an image at close range. In fact, as long as the photographer keeps a proper distance from the subject, it can not only narrow the distance between us and the subject through zooming, but also make the fill light effect of the flash more natural.

For the external flash of SLR camera, we can add a light effect with a soft mask to soften the flash. If the photographer uses the camera's built-in flash, he can use paper towels, butter paper and so on. To soften the flash, but pay attention to the color of the substance will affect the color of the flash light source. Now there are some props on the market to soften the built-in flash, and the effect is acceptable.

If the flash head of the mobile external flash can be twisted when shooting, you can try to use the method of turning the flash head to the ceiling or the left and right walls to reflect the flash, and use a large reflecting surface to soften the lighting effect. But the photographer should pay attention to the color and distance of the reflecting surface. For example, when shooting outdoors, they should not put the flashing lamp holder up and let the sky act as a reflecting surface. And that color of the reflect surface will affect the color of the flash light source.

Most DSLR can also adjust the output of the built-in flash, so you might as well make more use of it. When the output of the flash is found to be too strong or too weak after shooting, you can adjust the exposure compensation and shoot the image again. After trying it once or twice, we can master the more natural flash filling effect.
