A brief history of Thai film development

During World War II, film production in Thailand came to a standstill. At that time, movies were replaced by dramas and stage entertainment programs. After the war, Thailand's film industry made new progress. 16 mm color film was introduced for the first time, several famous dramas were adapted into movies, and actors and actresses on the stage became movie stars. From 1945 to 1955, film production is in a state of chaos. Producers can't find suitable film materials, so they imitate each other, and for the sake of commercial profits, they don't hesitate to name the film as a movie that has been released and created a box office. At the same time, they are also keen to make popular novels or small drama programs popular with the public into movies. Due to various reasons such as technical equipment, until the end of 1960s, Thailand only used 16mm color reversal film to shoot? There is only one copy, and most of them are silent, so professional dubbing actors dub through microphones during the screening, so some dubbing actors are very popular with the audience.

Early development stage

The first film in Thailand, Miss Su Wan (192 1), was shot by American producer H. McRae with the help of the Lati family in Vasu. 1927, the Ratti family in Vasu founded Srikran Film Company, which produced the first silent film directed by Thailand. Three years later, the company made its first sound film.

mature period

60 s

1964, Thailand Film Producers Association was established.

70 s

The 1970s was an important period for the development of Thai films. Due to the adoption of popular Thai folk songs, these films are very popular among rural audiences. Among them, "Love Song of Our Farm" (1970) was a great success, and the producer made a profit of 6 million baht, breaking the income record of Thai films. During this year, most producers added folk music to their films. Some movies have more than 30 folk songs, regardless of whether these songs have anything to do with the plot. At the end of 1970, director Piak-Baust filmed Zor, a film with a different style from Thai films at that time. In this film, the director made innovations in photography angle, style, actor skills and editing techniques. Although the film revenue is not as good as "Love Song of Our Farm", it has received rave reviews. This film is regarded as a model by many film writers and imitated. 1973, the government decided to give financial support to films, reduce the tax on imported films and increase the tax rate on foreign films, so as to increase the output of domestic films and adopt all 35 mm films. From 65438 to 0976, some new people appeared, who cared about reality and intervened in society. For example, Pampo Chaye-Aaron's first film, Dog Life, described the life in the slums of Bangkok, and proposed that the prerequisite for changing the lives of the poor is to improve the education level. This is unique in the trend that Thai films generally imitate Hollywood and western entertainment films and pursue box office value. By 1985, he had directed five films, such as Fog in the City, Cruel Nature, City of Beggars and Old Monk, and became the most famous director in Thailand.

The 1980s

Since 1980s, Thailand has produced about 130 films every year, which is second only to the Philippines in Southeast Asian countries. There are five or six big production groups in Thailand. There are 134 registered filmmakers, 44 first-class cinemas and 60 second-class cinemas in Bangkok. There are about 1 0,200 cinemas in China. The annual export volume of Thai films has been very low, with an average of only four or five films exported per year/kloc-0. At the same time, starting from 1976, the import tax levied by the Thai government on foreign films has been greatly increased, reaching a high price of 30 baht per meter, which has also curbed the import of foreign films.

After 2000

After 2000, several film companies emerged in Thailand, the most famous of which is GTH Film Company. In 2003, the company established a good reputation among the audience and peers with the film Little Lover, and then dominated the Thai film market with 2-3 excellent films every year. Almost every film can enter the international market and make great contributions to the Thai film industry.

In addition, Thai horror movies are also famous. Different from other countries' horror movies, Thailand's horror movies contain many philosophies of life besides horror. While feeling the horror, the audience also lamented the directors' good intentions.
