How to eliminate glare in photos?

One of the most annoying problems in photography may be the glare at the most inappropriate moment. This happens when a light source shines on a reflective surface. You can see this from any image: from the glasses when shooting portraits, the light will be reflected and form glare.

No matter what the cause of glare is, even unintentional glare will destroy the best image. There are several different ways to avoid, reduce or even completely eliminate the influence of glare on photos, so how to operate?

Filter If strong sunlight causes glare in portraits or close-ups, consider scattered light. If you carry a diffuser, you can gently filter out some dazzling sunlight. You can use a reflector or even a fill flash to "take away" some light from your subject to help fill in the dark shadows.

Reflected light If you shoot with a flash or some external light source, the light reflection from other surfaces (not the object itself) can help reduce glare. When using the built-in flash, if you can't rotate in a direction other than the standard direction, you need to use a simple reflector and diffuser for the built-in flash of the camera. This is a necessary condition to make the lighting softer and more attractive.

Change the position If you find glare when shooting a specific object, please try to change the position first. Moving a little and putting the sunlight behind your shoulders will definitely reduce the flare in the frame. You can also try to move the object itself to protect it from sunlight or other light sources.

If there is something wrong with the subject's glasses, please ask him to tilt his head away from the light source, which can reduce the possibility of glasses reflecting light.

Consider changing the shooting time. If it's natural light, the location can't be changed. You can come back after the lighting improves. For example, the height of a clear sunny day is the time full of glare and reflection. On the contrary, when the sun sets a little in the sky, it is easy to use to get the best lighting. Cloud is your best friend. In terms of lighting, they will help scatter light, thus minimizing the possibility of glare.

Using polarizing filter with polarizer can reduce reflection and glare, and the colors in photos can be brighter and more saturated. If you want to eliminate the glare on water, leaves and stones, please try to use a polarizer and rotate it until the glare disappears.

If you want to shoot a sunset, using a gradient filter is very suitable for shooting. With it, you can get rid of glare and keep bright colors, such as the sky.

Using a hood is a good way to reduce similar glare. These are lens halos. These simple but reliable devices are specially designed to eliminate sunspots, but at the same time they will absorb a lot of light. Installing a hood can save photographers from many problems in photography.

As a last choice, photo post-processing can eliminate glare during post-processing. Of course, if the glare covers the face of the object or the key part of the image, you can't do this, but when the glare moves and is on the side, you can use the recovery and cloning tools in the photo editor to delete it safely.
