Notes on the trip to London (4)
On the way, the tour guide Xie Zhuomiao introduced the relevant situation of London to everyone. First of all, Xie Dao starts with the title of London: Everyone is familiar with the name "London", but different people have different views on which region this title represents. Generally speaking, if you say "Greater London", you mean a vast area including 32 local administrative districts of London and the City of London, with a total area of about 1.500 square kilometers, which is about the area surrounded by M25 Ring Road. How big is this concept? For example, Shanghai downtown 1600 square kilometers. The word "London" in a narrow sense refers to the central area of the city, including the City of London and the City of Westminster.

London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the largest city in Europe and the largest economic and financial center. The Romans founded this city more than two thousand years ago. For hundreds of years, London has had a great influence on the world. London is a very diverse metropolis, with residents from all over the world and diverse races, religions and cultures. There are more than 300 languages in this city. At the same time, London is also a world-famous tourist destination with a large number of scenic spots and museums.

As luck would have it, speaking of museums, the first stop of our trip to London happened to be a visit to the most famous British Museum in London. After more than three hours' journey, the bus arrived at the British Museum in Russell Street, London at around 1: 30 pm. This museum is the oldest and most magnificent comprehensive museum in the world, and it is also one of the four largest and most famous museums in the world.

Walking into the museum, people can't help but marvel at the magnificent buildings and colorful collections here. It's interesting to say. Although the British Museum is smaller than the Metropolitan Museum in the United States, its exhibition area is larger than the Palace Museum in China. Initially, it was a privately donated library. 1754 The montague Building was opened to the public for the first time. 1823, King George IV of England built the present Romanesque building on the original site of montague Building, and donated many royal collections to become the British Museum today.

Speaking of cultural relics in the British Museum, it has a very extensive collection and can be called the World History Museum. Babylonia, India, China and Greece, the cradles of human civilization, have a large number of precious cultural relics. Greek stone carvings, Indian gem ring, Babylonian silverware and China porcelain are dazzling. There are several bodies found thousands of years before Mawangdui, but they are not from England, but from Egypt. More than a dozen mummies on display are only part of the collection. The British Museum has the largest collection of Egyptian cultural relics, especially mummies, outside Egypt.

In particular, the most precious cultural relics in Egypt, stone tablets engraved with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Greek on the front and back, were hidden in the British Museum 4,000 years ago. This is the only piece in the world, and based on it, the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt have been deciphered, which is called the treasure of the town hall. Because the British Museum was built earlier, its shape and layout have become the standard model of museums, and later generations are scrambling to follow suit. Two of the exhibits are particularly attractive. First, China porcelain, from the Han and Tang Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, blue and white, Jun porcelain, Tang tricolor and cloisonne are arranged in chronological order and place of origin, which is probably the largest ceramics museum in China outside China. Indian gem ring is also very eye-catching, with various colors, such as red fire, navy blue, pomegranate red and emerald, and diamonds, spheres, ovals and abnormities of different sizes, which is really wonderful.

The British Museum is also famous for its library, because the British Museum originated from a private library donated by Sir hans sloane, and George IV donated a lot of books when rebuilding the new museum. This is the main place where Marx collected information and wrote his immortal work Das Kapital. Many tourists come to look for the seat where Marx once sat.

The British Museum collects many cultural relics and treasures from all over the world, as well as manuscripts of many great scientists. The richness and diversity of collections are rare in museums all over the world. The British National Museum has more than 8 million collections. Due to the limitation of space, there are still a large number of collections that have not been publicly exhibited. The dazzling array of exhibits and magnificent buildings left a deep impression on people.

After visiting the British Museum, London has entered dusk again and will soon be brightly lit. That night, everyone first came to Wang Ji Restaurant in Chinatown for dinner. London Chinatown, also known as London China City, is located in Soho, Westminster, London, England. It is one of the most traditional Chinatowns in China, with China cultural characteristics, which not only brings tourists and wealth to London, but also makes it a major attraction in London.

There are two archways here, one north-south and the other east-west. There are four characters in a book, namely "London Chinatown" and "Peace for the Country and Peace for the People", and the other archways are "Peace in China" and "Cheng Xiang in England". The two archways are vivid and magnificent against the background of night lights.

The Chinese community in London first appeared in the19th century, initially concentrated in the east dock area, and gradually moved to the Soho area in the city center from the 1950s. At present, Chinatown in London consists of one street and several horizontal streets. It is small, but it is located in a prime location, not far from the Queen of Buckingham Palace and Downing Street 10 Prime Minister's Office. There is an archway with China cultural characteristics at the entrance, with couplets embedded on both sides.

There are China restaurants, China shops and souvenir shops in Chinatown. During the traditional Spring Festival in China, Chinese in London held a grand celebration in Chinatown, setting off fireworks, holding dragon and lion dances and acrobatic performances, decorating China shops with lanterns, and posting Spring Festival couplets to welcome the God of Wealth. On New Year's Day, Chinatown is bustling and crowded, full of festive atmosphere. For China people who have lived in London for many years, Chinatown is a panacea, which can temporarily eliminate endless homesickness and create an illusion of returning to their hometown.

After dinner, the group members strolled on the streets of London and on the bridge over the Thames. Enjoy the night view of the London Eye, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge and other famous British landmarks. If the Thames is compared to the Milky Way, then all parts of London are the stars around the Milky Way, and the center is Trafalgar Square. From here, it takes no more than 45 minutes to walk to all the main attractions. The subway takes Chaling Cross Station as the center, and it takes only 15 minutes to reach the main attractions by subway.

At 20 16. 12.04 London time 13:30, the team returned to London for the second time after sightseeing at Windsor Castle and rowed at the Thames Pier. London Tower Bridge, Big Ben, St Paul's Cathedral, Fragments Building, etc. I just saw it the night before, and these landmark buildings under the blue sky and white clouds today.

The cruise ship set sail from the pier opposite the London Eye, and Xie Dao also introduced the relevant landscape. Let's start with the Thames. This river in London is the famous "Mother River" in Britain. Tam River, also known as Tam River, originated in Cotswold Mountain in southwest England, with a total length of 346 kilometers. It spans the British capital London and 10 cities along the river, with a drainage area of 13000 square kilometers. The river widens at the lower reaches of London, forming a 29-kilometer-wide estuary that empties into the North Sea.

Compared with some big rivers on the earth, the Thames is not long, but all the places it flows through are the essence of British culture. Perhaps on the other hand, the Thames gave birth to splendid British civilization. Most of the main buildings in London are located on both sides of the Thames, especially those with a history of hundreds or even three or four hundred years, such as Nelson statue symbolizing victory, Westminster Abbey where many great men are buried, St. Paul's Cathedral in Renaissance style, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge in London and so on. Every building is a masterpiece of art. Although these buildings have gone through vicissitudes and even experienced the baptism of war like World War II, they still maintain their inherent appearance and are still used by people today.

Xie Dao pointed to the London Eye, which rotates slowly opposite, and said that its full name is British Airways London Eye, also known as Millennium Wheel, which is located on the Thames in London. It is the fourth largest Ferris wheel in the world, one of the landmarks in London and one of the most attractive tourist attractions in London. The London Eye was opened at the end of 1999, with a total height of 135 meters (443 feet). London has 32 cabins in its eyes. Because the cabin is tempered glass, it is equipped with an air conditioning system. Each carriage can carry about 16 passengers, and the turning speed is about 0.26 meters per second, that is, one lap takes 30 minutes.

The pier is located on the west bank of the Thames. Behind our cruise ship is a long building by the river: Westminster Palace, also known as Parliament House, is the seat of the British Parliament, including the House of Lords and the House of Commons. It is one of the representative works of Gothic Renaissance architecture, and 1987 is listed as a world cultural heritage. The building includes about 1, 100 independent rooms, 100 stairs and 4.8km long corridors.

Although today's palace was basically rebuilt from the19th century, it still retains many historical sites when it was first built. The bell tower in its northwest corner is the famous Big Ben. However, in June 20 12, the name of Big Ben was changed to "elizabeth tower". Big Ben attacks every hour. It is also the third heaviest clock in Britain, weighing 13.8 tons. Although "Big Ben" originally refers to the clock itself, today it has been used to refer to the whole tower.

With the cruise, we soon saw St. Paul's Cathedral on the shore. It is a world-famous religious shrine, the fifth cathedral in the world, the first cathedral in Britain and the second largest dome church in the world, ranking among the five largest churches in the world. St Paul's Cathedral was first built in 604, and then it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. Sir Christopher Wren, a famous British design master and architect, completed the design of the greatest church in London at the end of 17, which took 45 years.

Another architectural feature of St. Paul's Church is that a few churches are designed and built by only one person, rather than churches that have experienced many designers and architects. There is also a tombstone of Ryan in the church, which says "If you want to find his monument, look around" (if you want to find his monument, look around).

St Paul's Cathedral, the religious center in London, is the second largest dome church in the world, with gorgeous Baroque architecture, which was completed at the end of 17. The church is in Renaissance style, covered with a huge dome, about11m high, about 74 m wide, about 157 m deep, and the dome is 34 m in diameter ... This magnificent building is the best work of architect Ryan, with excellent design and quiet interior. The top of the tower is an excellent place overlooking the city of London. The wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was held in 198 1 year.

After an hour and a half of sailing, our cruise ship arrived at Greenwich Pier. Come to university of greenwich, which is located by the river. The team members walked along the campus wall on the busy Greenwich Street. After passing the Royal naval museum, they entered a big lawn garden and slowly climbed a hill, which is the world-famous Greenwich Observatory.

RGO Royal Greenwich Observatory is a comprehensive observatory built by King Richard II of England in Greenwich, London on 1675. 10 laid the foundation stone in August, and the king also created the position of royal astronomer (the first one was John? Fransted), director of the Observatory, and "devotes himself to correcting the catalogue of celestial bodies and the position of stars with the most sincere care and efforts, so that the longitude can be correctly determined and navigation becomes a perfect art". The whole observatory is located on a hill in Greenwich Park.

On the eve of World War II, London has developed into a world-famous industrial city. After the war, the population of Greenwich increased sharply, the number of factories increased, and the air pollution became more and more serious, especially the interference of night lights, which was extremely unfavorable for starry sky observation. This forced the observatory to move to Hearst Montsouburg, Sussex, on the southeast coast of England from 65438 to 0948. The environment here is beautiful, the air is fresh and the observation conditions are good. The relocated observatory is still called the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

But Greenwich Observatory is not on the 0 meridian, and the 0 meridian on the earth still passes through the former site of Greenwich Observatory. The former site of Greenwich Observatory later became the astronomical station of the British Maritime Department and the National Maritime Museum. The astronomical instruments used in the early days, especially the copper wire embedded in the ground in the meridian hall -0 meridian, are displayed here, attracting tourists from all over the world. Here, the group members put their feet on both sides of the 0 meridian to take pictures, symbolizing stepping on the east longitude and the west longitude at the same time.

After the relocation of Greenwich Observatory 1950, it was placed under the National Ocean Museum, with astronomical stations and instruments, which were mainly used for exhibitions. Among the astronomical historical materials on display are early astronomical telescopes, clocks, globes, armillary sphere designed by early countries (many of which were made in China at that time) and the discovery of many astronomical phenomena, such as Halley's Comet. As the location here is the commanding height of London, you can have a panoramic view of London's times and urban areas.

After visiting Greenwich Observatory, the trip to London was basically completed successfully. London is one of the four world-class cities, and the other three are new york, Tokyo and Paris. 180 1 At the beginning of the 20th century, London, as the capital of the British Empire, became the largest city in the world because of its outstanding achievements in the fields of politics, economy, humanities and culture, and scientific and technological inventions. With the rapid development of science and technology, the rapid expansion of population and the constant renewal of urban appearance, London has become a modern metropolis, but it still welcomes tourists from all over the world with an open mind.
