Why do people in Taiwan Province Province call the subway MRT?

The first transportation system in Taiwan Province Province to use the word "MRT" was the Taipei MRT. Because its operation has successfully improved urban traffic, the word' MRT' has gradually become popular and applied to many new traffic facilities.

The full name of "MRT" is "Mass Rapid Transit System", and the English translation is Mass Rapid Transit(MRT).

Mass is understood as mass, public, speed and swiftness, and public transportation system.

Therefore, the word "MRT" comes from the literal translation of English Mass Rapid Transit in Taiwan Province Province.

Subway is just one of the modes of transportation in Taiwan's MRT system. Take Taipei subway as an example, including subway, shuttle bus, Beitou cable car and freshwater light rail.

In many cities around the world, similar systems are mainly laid underground, so although they are customarily called' underground railways', not all of them actually run underground (in fact, after leaving the densely populated areas in the city center, most subway systems will run on the ground to save construction costs). Therefore, Taiwan Province Province translated the Mass Rapid Transit into MRT, to avoid the misnomer.
