Plot summary:

The story takes place during World War II. Grace lives on a small island with her two children, Ann and Nicholas, waiting for her husband to return from the war.

They live alone in a huge apartment. Although the house seems to be too big and empty for the family of three, Grace prefers this to allow her two children to rest. According to the doctor's regulations, they cannot receive sunlight and can only stay indoors. In order to ensure their health, Grace even made many rules: for example, all curtains must be closed, and every door must be closed immediately when it is opened, etc.

Since the servant disappeared without any reason not long ago, their life is somewhat inconvenient. When three people came to apply for servants one day, Grace immediately agreed. These three people are Mrs. Miller, the nanny, Mr. Turto, the gardener, and Linda, the mute maid.

The arrival of the three people seemed to add a bit of vitality to the house. But a series of strange things began to happen, the door would close automatically, the piano would sound automatically, and Ann even said she saw a man named Victor in the house.

Grace gradually felt that the house was surrounded by a weird and mysterious atmosphere, and she fell into uneasiness. Everything has become confusing. Is there really anyone else in the room besides them? The three servants seemed a little unpredictable. What were their goals? In fact, Grace herself is a rather weird woman, and she became a little hysterical in this environment.

A nightmare begins, and Grace and her children face what seems to be supernatural forces...

Behind the scenes:

A 1999 film "The Sixth Sense" sparked a craze for psychological horror films, and a lot of imitations popped up. But obviously none of them can reach the level of the "Spirit" film. And this year's "Island" is expected to truly inherit its mantle and become the top masterpiece in this wave.

Like Night Shyamalan, the director of this film, Alejandro Amamba, is also a member of the Foreign Legion in Hollywood. It seems that the real masters of horror films are all from Arcadia, American directors. Talent is hard to compete with in terms of creative ability. This director from Spain is still a relatively unfamiliar name to most people, and his current development in Hollywood seems to be relatively smooth. How could this director, who has only 5 films and is still relatively unknown at international film festivals, win the opportunity to make this A-level film when he first arrived? This is also thanks to the strong introduction and promotion of Tom Cruise.

Among the few films Amamba has made, the one that really won him great fame was the extremely popular film "Open Your Eyes" in Spain. This thriller and suspense film starring Penélope Cruz not only made this currently popular beauty popular, but also set off a craze in Spain, especially among young people, and won the Goya Award (quite It received multiple nominations at the Oscars in Spain and was well-received and a hit.

Of course, for Amamba, the biggest benefit this film brought to him was that it attracted the attention of Tom Cruise, who is a powerful figure in Hollywood. Cruise liked the film very much and he bought it. With the English remake rights, the film titled "Vanilla Sky" will be released this fall. And Amamba was also appreciated and entered Hollywood. The film was invested by Miramax, a production company jointly owned by Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Filming started in June last year, with Cruise serving as the producer and Kidman starring. It is a sign of their deep love as a couple. Although the relationship between Cruise and his wife has now broken down, the film was still successfully completed.

Amamba just caught up with the craze of horror films, and he is indeed quite talented in directing. "Open Your Eyes" is outstanding in terms of the interlocking storyline, constant doubts, and the creation of an atmosphere of panic. Precisely because of that film's reputation, this film has also been favored by many parties, and may push this suspense horror film craze to another climax.

As an admirer of Kubrick, Amamba admitted that he was inspired by "The Shining" to create this story.

From the plot summary, we can indeed see that it is quite similar to the classic horror film "The Shining". For example, the story takes place in a claustrophobic environment in a large house. Perhaps this is Amamba’s homage to the master, rewriting The Shining as a popular version for women. At the same time, it is a ghost horror film like "The Sixth Sense". Whether it can be as creepy as the latter, let us wait and see.

For Amamba, this is indeed his good luck, but for the starring Nicole Kidman, this is really a sad movie. When the filming of the film started, she and Cruise were still sweet and sweet, and the film was used to witness their strong marriage and love. But now when the film is about to be released, things have changed and only the painful past is evoked.

However, Kidman, who has lived in the shadow of "Mrs. Cruise" for a long time, also proved that she is not a flower vase with her performance in movies this year and has successfully launched a career. The singing and dancing in "Moulin Rouge" are stunning, and this film will challenge ghosts, and "Birthday Girl", which has been completed but has been scheduled to be released next year, will show another kind of style. "Moulin Rouge" lifted the veil in Cannes, and the latter two films will explode in Venice in September. This year's film festival has almost become Kidman's exclusive stage. By devoting so many works at the same time, Kidman has gained and lost.

Review:

This film is both thrillingly terrifying and highly intelligent.

The director creates rich entertainment effects by using strong contrast between light and dark, the role of point of view, and excellent soundtrack and photography to assist the suspenseful story. Its most successful part is that it makes you keep thinking while watching it. By the end, you can infer a variety of possible endings, and each one has enough reasons to support it. You can't predict what will happen in the end, but will just fill your head with all kinds of questions. Waiting for the results to be announced. After the truth is revealed, you need to rethink the cause and effect, and even discuss it with others, in order to fully enjoy the fun of watching this film. It is also not full of model characters and stylized plots like ordinary Hollywood genre films.

Another outstanding feature of this film is the carefully created atmosphere. It does not rely on cheap screams and gratuitous bloody scenes to earn the audience's horror emotions, but on tight It relies on the atmosphere of mystery and horror that accompanies it from beginning to end to enhance the audience's fear.

Although on the surface it looks very similar to "The Sixth Sense", this film is still very impactful and attractive. Its narrative is very fresh and unique, and it does have a wonderful, gripping story. In contrast, "The Sixth Sense" only relied on a surprise ending, and the film itself was hollow and the story was thin.
