Starting his acting career in 1997, Lian Kai has already performed in many outstanding movies and TV series.

Before coming to Hong Kong in 1996, he was a special effects costume and makeup artist in the United States, where he helped many local film workers including Tsui Hark. Later, Lian Kai went to Taiwan and was spotted by director Zhu Yanping. While helping him create some special effects looks for the movie, Zhu Yanping also recommended Lian Kai to play roles in the movies "Blood and Blue Sky" and "The Heart of the Heart".

In May 2004, he participated in the Hong Kong Wireless TV series "The Doctor" as He Zheng. This was also his first TV series.

In June 2005, he starred in the TV series "If the Moon Has Eyes" adapted from Zhang Xiaoxian's novel, playing Qiu Qingzhi. In 2006, he partnered with Sun Li and starred in "The Eunuch" as Mr. Qian.
