Zelcarlo is tarkovsky's fourth solo film on 1974, and it happens to be in the center of his seven official films (excluding the graduation short film "Roller and Violin" of the Soviet National Film Academy). This is not only the center of index value, but also the center of art.

Time-disordered newsreels about world events are scattered among them, providing environmental index and tone conversion. The structure of the film continues to advance through flashback and pre-flashback, and is expressed through color conversion. This leads to the recurring theme of the film, which embodies the alienation style and emotional isolation of the narrator.
