How to use outdoor lights

First of all, the exposure setting of the camera must be fully manual (M file), and any automatic metering and exposure program of the camera can't sense the exposure of the flash moment.

When using flash, the photographer must master the principle of exposure characteristics of flash. The instantaneous luminous duration of the flash lamp is very short, generally within one thousandth of a second. Therefore, camera control to control flash exposure is only related to aperture and sensitivity settings, and has nothing to do with shutter speed. As long as the shutter speed is within the flash synchronization range, no matter how it changes, as long as the aperture and sensitivity settings are unchanged, the flash exposure is the same.

When the flash lamp and sunlight work at the same time, the setting of shutter speed is directly related to the exposure of sunlight because sunlight is a continuous light source. Therefore, due to the particularity of the exposure of these two light sources, a special control technology of flash external shooting is produced: first set the aperture size to control the flash exposure, and then adjust the shutter speed to control the natural light exposure within the flash synchronization range. Effective use of this special technology can create a very special artistic effect. We can take the subject as the main light source and the environment as the light source, select and fix a correct subject flash exposure aperture value, and then adjust the shutter speed when shooting. At this time, the exposure of the subject has been fixed by the aperture and hardly changed, which can greatly dim the brightness of the environment, highlight the subject and separate from the environment.

When shooting outdoors with a flash, the subject should keep a certain distance from the selected environment. The main body and the environment are located in different light source irradiation ranges, which is convenient for independent control of their exposure.

Flash and sunlight have different light characteristics. The sun is far away from the earth, and when the sun shines on the ground objects, the light is close to parallel. A flashlight is a point light source, and the illumination of the point light source is inversely proportional to the brightness produced by objects at different distances. That is to say, when the distance between the flash and the subject is shortened to half, the brightness of the subject will be four times that of the original under the condition that the output power of the flash is unchanged. Therefore, the photographer can effectively use distance adjustment to control the brightness and coverage of the flash. Generally speaking, the closer the flash is to the subject, the stronger the light effect on the subject, and conversely, the higher the degree of integration with the environment.

The special flash for outdoor shooting can be equipped with many light effect accessories. Adding a soft mask can make the light quality very soft. With the light shield, light can be used more accurately. The color of light can be changed by inserting films of different colors. If the outdoor shooting lamp is only used as supplementary light under natural light conditions, it can directly illuminate the reflector at any required position to generate supplementary light for the main body, with more controllable space of intensity and more freely adjustable position.
