Activity background and schedule

Activity background

Mount Everest means "the third goddess" in Tibetan. Because of its special geographical conditions, it is also called the roof of the earth world except the Antarctic and the Arctic.

The environmental condition of Mount Everest has always been comparable to the other two poles of the earth-the South Pole and the North Pole. Through the observation and research of scientists, it is found that the environmental conditions in the three polar regions of the earth, including Mount Everest, Antarctica and Arctic, are in a background state with little or no external pollution, which can be regarded as "environmental background values" on the earth.

As the highest mountain in the world, she has always been yearned for by the world for its tranquility and purity. However, now the "quiet and pure" coat of this "goddess" is being covered with all kinds of rubbish. Since the 1950s, with the increasing upsurge of Mount Everest, more and more wastes have brought a noticeable impact on the fragile ecological environment of Mount Everest. Especially since 1960, when the China mountaineering team climbed Mount Everest from the north slope for the first time, the activities of climbing Mount Everest from the north slope in China have been increasing day by day, and the surrounding environment of each camp has been polluted to varying degrees. Around the camp and between the camps of various hiking routes, climbers and hikers left a lot of domestic garbage and feces, such as tents, sleeping bags, oxygen bottles, batteries, plastic bags and so on. , leaving up to 67 tons of garbage every year. Even the bodies of climbers buried deep in the ice and snow are a kind of pollution to Everest to some extent.

According to statistics, from 192 1 to 1999, a total of 6 15 tons of waste was dumped in the glaciers of Mount Everest, leaving many regrets for the sacred snow-capped mountains. The excrement and waste of climbers have aggravated the pollution, and the retreat of glaciers is gradually emerging. Under normal circumstances, it takes 95 years for steel to completely corrode, and it takes about 220 years for plastic products to decompose. However, the climate of Mount Everest is cold and dry, and the decomposition time of garbage is much longer. The survey and observation results of scientists on Mount Everest show that the snowfall on Mount Everest contains trace amounts of DDT, lead and other harmful components, and the concentration is getting higher and higher. As the highest environmental monitoring station in the world, the purity of Mount Everest is very important to the global environment. What is even more worrying is that the garbage discarded at high altitudes cannot be cleaned up unless professional climbers are organized.

In this context, the "Great Environmental Protection Action on Mount Everest on the Roof of the World" was gradually conceived and launched. From September 2, 2004 to September 6, 2004/kloc-0, 24 volunteers took part in the first "Roof of the Earth, 2004 World Everest Environmental Protection Activity". This environmental protection operation successfully completed the cleaning work of Mount Everest, with a total of 8 tons of garbage removed, ranging from 5 100 meters above sea level to 6,500 meters above sea level, mainly domestic garbage left by climbers, such as wine bottles and bottles.

On May 22nd, 2005, 1 1: 08, China surveyors set up a red survey beacon at the top of the earth again after 30 years, and began to measure the height of Mount Everest. While the surveyors were climbing Mount Everest, the Everest protection operation was launched in Lhasa and Beijing in 2005.

From May 20th to June 7th, this activity, a 35-member environmental protection team composed of journalists from more than a dozen news media, representatives of corporate sponsors and environmental protection volunteers recruited from the society, together with members of the local Tibetan mountaineering team and alpine collaborators, formed a 100-person cleaning team, and comprehensively cleaned up the mountaineering garbage in Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5 120m to 8,000m. All environmental protection volunteers who participated in the cleaning held high the theme of "humanity, inheritance and participation" and overcame the harsh natural conditions such as severe cold, lack of oxygen and snow caused by high altitude. More than 400 bags of garbage were collected and transported to Lhasa by hand in World Environment Day for harmless treatment on June 5. This is also by far the highest environmental protection activity in the world.

This Everest environmental protection activity began in 2004 and is planned to last until 2008. In the future, the large-scale Everest cleaning activities organized every year will be composed of news media reporters, social environmental volunteers and business representatives, and together with the members of the local Tibetan mountaineering team, they will carry out long-term and lasting "environmental cleaning" for Everest and add beauty to the Beijing Green Olympics.

A phone call suddenly brought me back to the real space from my measurement trip in Wan Li. During the playback of the time machine, I retreated to the platform of Beijing West Railway Station on March 20th. 1998 ... When the shutter rang, Peking University climbed to the top for 8 kilometers in a century. All the climbers who went to Zhuoao Tour were fixed on the negative of my camera. In my last farewell wish to the climber who stepped on the train, I held the hand of a very slender and delicate girl I had never seen before. Behind this hand is the protagonist of this book, Lv Yan, the petite, the most determined, the weakest and the strongest girl I have ever seen in my mountaineering adventure.

Mountaineering exploration has always been the business of a group of bold men. Since the last century, women have joined the field closest to death. Since the 1980s, countless explorers have drifted, climbed and ventured on foot in their own way in China, and have continued the footprints of their ancestors in a modern and scientific way on 9.6 million square kilometers of China, filling a lot of historical gaps and completing some quite important geographical discoveries. It is these adventure travelers who have become the first batch of volunteers who care about environmental protection in China. With the keen eyes of explorers and discoverers, they discovered the sharp deterioration of ecology and the sharp pollution of the environment. They have made the whole society pay unprecedented attention to the environment through media and personal practice.

The footsteps of explorers are the footsteps of human exploration and progress. However, with the development of explorers, more and more people enter nature, which brings disasters to nature and the environment. In less than 100 years, the problems brought by human beings to nature and environment have reached the highest place in the world, and we are proud of the top of the earth. ...

The first time I went to Everest was 1992. After that, I saw it in countless angles and countless mountain passes during my trip to 72 counties in 7 cities in Tibet. However, I can never describe the shock when I first saw it nearly 200 kilometers away. Its majesty soared into the sky, its overwhelming momentum as the king of mountains, and its unparalleled reputation in geography. At that moment, I understood why Tibetans had to travel thousands of kilometers to make a pilgrimage, and their unique spiritual life in the highest place in the world, the place closest to the sun. Mount Everest belongs to the kind of mountain that is rare in a lifetime and will be unforgettable after seeing it.

I stayed at the foot of Mount Everest for a few days. After waiting for several days, Mount Everest showed me its unprecedented dignity in a few minutes in the evening. I took a picture of Mount Everest, which is called the Four Wonders. The second is that the mountain is illuminated by the sun and it is already dark; The third is that the whole mountain radiates golden light in the evening sunset, like a golden mountain; The snow on the mountain is particularly heavy. Due to the warming climate and melting glaciers, I saw less and less ice and more exposed rocks in the photos of Mount Everest taken in different periods. A golden snow mountain is quietly turning into a black mountain. ...

In my worries, I am delighted to see many people entering the plateau for environmental protection, and I also see a familiar figure, my classmate, Lv Yan, who is studying at Peking University.

I have known Yan Lu for 9 years. Looking at Yan Lu's writing, I remember her petite body shaking in front of my eyes with a heavy schoolbag: the rock climbing wall in the Shan Ying Club of Peking University, the running track on the playground for mountaineering physical training, the crowded job fair in the Shan Ying Club, the chorus performance before visiting three European countries (Yan Lu is a senior member of Peking University Choir, and her singing is as beautiful as the music of nature), the film screening activity of the Photography Association, the climbing route of Mount Everest in Qinghai, Zhuoaoyou Camp, the sixth peak in Tibet ... In my eyes, Lv Yan is constantly challenging and climbing beyond herself and her opponents who are much stronger than her, showing a girl's beauty, talent, wisdom, perseverance and courage to the fullest on the stage of life and strugglers.

In the past, Mount Everest, as the place where human beings set foot the least, was in a background state with little or no external pollution, which can be regarded as the "environmental background value" on the earth. However, it is such a sacred and last pure land that has been artificially polluted in recent years. Fortunately, more people have paid attention to the pollution of Mount Everest and started environmental protection actions with the support of all walks of life.

Now, Lv Yan, with a pair of "very slender and delicate hands that have never been seen before", has led us on the road to the highest mountain in the world. Through the "Roof of the Earth, the World Everest Environmental Protection Movement", she ventured to lead us into a unique journey of double purification of nature and soul, broke into the forbidden zone of life, and completed the arduous environmental protection activities with the highest altitude in history under the harsh environment of extreme cold and lack of oxygen, snowstorm and danger. These hands will pick up the "garbage with the highest altitude" in history and bring it to the foot of the mountain, and finally complete the harmless treatment. At Everest Base Camp, they experienced the death of Na Ren, a famous mountaineer who climbed the world138,000m peak. Experienced the danger that environmental volunteers were diagnosed with altitude sickness in the morning but could not get off the bus; Then climb to the height of 6500 meters with tears, clean up 400 bags of garbage in the thin air area and hand it over to the local government. The whole process is thrilling and unforgettable.

When a person walks in a deserted and uninhabited no-man's land in northern Tibet, he often doesn't see anyone for a few days and can't say a word. After staying in the silent world for a long time, he has a unique feeling and can often feel the existence of the universe. The earth we live in is only one of the 6.5438+million known stars in the universe, and it is also the only known planet with intelligent life. In the lifeless thinness of the universe and the darkness of infinite light years, the earth drifted alone for 4.6 billion years. The history of the birth of our human civilization is only a few thousand years in total. When we camp alone, we often think that human beings should not be the terminator to end the beautiful life of the earth, and should not bury mountains, rivers, land and oceans with garbage and pollution. Looking at the distant starry sky with a bonfire, I hope that one day, when the intelligent life of aliens visits the earth, our earth will still be the most beautiful planet, with beautiful blue sea and beautiful scenery, and human beings will not have wars and disasters. Like all the people on this ship, I wish you good luck in the vast universe of double journey of personal life and human destiny.

Supplement: After writing this preface and reading Lv Yan's book, my tears unwillingly overflowed from my eyes and flowed freely. The names of Mount Qomolangma, Xiegeer, Dingri, Lhasa, Shigatse, Yarlung Zangbo River, Potala Palace, Ali and Hoh Xil came to my eyes one by one, making me confused about the time and space at the moment, and my three-year trip to Tibet, which I don't often recall. 49860 . 6886888686 1

Song Xiaonan: Traveler, explorer and photographer, traveling to China for the first time-the first person to travel around China.

On March 24th, 1987, we started from Tiananmen Square and began to travel around China county by county. It takes 2 1 year to travel all over China and go to a county in three days. At present, it has passed through all 100 cities and counties in Xinjiang, all 79 cities and counties in Tibet, all 96 flag counties in Inner Mongolia, all16/kloc-0 cities and counties in Sichuan and other 1235 cities and counties in the whole province, covering an area of 7.2 million square kilometers.

Just a week before Lv Yan asked me to write this preface, I attended the 0/5th anniversary celebration of Shenzhen Cycling Association/KLOC-in Shenzhen, and saw the staff of the Association selling a book at a charity bazaar, entitled "Experience in Hoh Xil 10 Years-Volunteers Telling". Among the volunteers in the book, I have a familiar friend, that is, Zou Zhuogang, secretary-general of the Bicycle Association. I was very moved to see the story of Lao Zou and a group of volunteers directing traffic and controlling traffic flow on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, and reserving a passage to protect the migration of Tibetan antelopes. Lao Zou, like me, is an outdoor sports enthusiast and started outdoor sports purely out of personal hobbies. But obviously, more and more outdoor sports enthusiasts go out of the city because they like to communicate with nature, but far from the city, they still can't escape the serious influence of human activities on nature, so they join the team to protect nature.

In the past 20 years, the relationship between outdoor sports people and nature in China has gone through three stages. In the mid-1980s, outdoor walking was basically out of work needs, and people struggled with the harsh natural environment because of national tasks. At this time, the relationship between man and nature is struggle, and the most typical word is "conquest". From the late 1980s to the 1990s, more and more outdoor sports enthusiasts emerged. They come to nature for the purpose of releasing their individuality, and they are more active and independent, pursuing the enjoyment of their senses and personal experience. What they see at this level is the communication and exchange between man and nature as individuals. In recent years, a new stage has begun to appear, that is, more and more outdoor enthusiasts hope that people can live in harmony with nature, protect the sustainable development of the original ecological natural landscape and advocate low-impact outdoor sports. The emergence of this stage is attributed to volunteers and NGOs who insisted on ecological protection in their early years, such as the Green River in Yang Xin and Liang Congjie's Friends of Nature. Now the scale of this team is getting bigger and bigger, and the whole society is aware of the importance of ecological protection. Even our government has put forward the concept of "harmonious society", which is indeed the progress of our society and the improvement of spiritual civilization.

Lv Yan is my teammate in the Peking University mountaineering team. She was 1998, the team doctor when Peking University celebrated its centenary by climbing Zhuoao Peak. She is meticulous, considerate and strong, and left a deep impression on all our team members in that mountaineering activity. I heard that she took part in the activity of cleaning Everest, and I couldn't help sweating. Even cleaning up the garbage below 6500 meters is not an easy task for any ordinary climber. However, seeing Lv Yan's diary and her happy expression after coming back, I understand that this is not only an honor, but also a satisfaction after realizing social responsibility. The Everest cleaning activity has been going on for two years. In addition to protecting and restoring the environment in the Everest region, it constantly reminds climbers and all outdoor enthusiasts to engage in all outdoor activities in a low-impact way. As the saying goes, "Don't leave anything but footprints, and don't take anything away except photos". Thank Lv Yan and her teammates for everything they have done to protect Mount Everest.
