Why is Stiglitz called "the father of modern photography"?

Alfred Stiglitz is a master in the history of American photography.

An important contribution of Stiglitz to photography is that he organized and initiated photographic separatism, also known as "photographic separatism". When Stiglitz was 25 years old, his unique artistic talent began to appear. 1902 or so, Stiglitz began to question many artistic concepts of "photo photography". 1902 established a photography separation school in the United States, founded a publication and opened the "29 1" gallery, and spared no effort to provide conditions to introduce and support avant-garde painters and photographers in Europe and America, such as Cezanne. Since the 20th century, the United States has surpassed Britain and France to become the vanguard of world art photography, which is not unrelated to Stiglitz's unremitting efforts.

Regarding photography separatism, Stiglitz explained: "Organize the loose Americans who devote themselves to photo photography, and let people realize that photo photography is not a foil to art, but a unique means to express themselves." He tried to emphasize that photography should not only be technical, but also consider the laws and characteristics of photography itself in expressing individual personality, so as to make photography more pure and independent of painting. Stiglitz advocates "pure photography", that is, giving full play to the characteristics of photography itself, the images of photos should be true and clear, and the colors should be rich and vivid.

His advocacy of pure photography certainly transcends the problem of "how to take pictures", but expands the independent space of photography art, that is to say, photography is photography, not an accessory of other arts. Stiglitz's great achievements in photography made him known as "the father of contemporary photography".

To put it simply, before Alfred Stiglitz, photographers imitated painting by various means and lacked their own independent photography concept. With the efforts of Alfred Stiglitz, photography began to show its charm in documentary language and became an independent new art, well, this is the art of photography.
