What should I pay attention to in street shooting?
1. Film shooting would rather be overexposed than underexposed.
Because it is easier to show some bright details on film (but it is more difficult to repair details in the dark). Eric said that if the color film is slightly overexposed, it is easier to strengthen the color contrast.
My heart: It used to be almost accurate to measure light with digital photography. I usually like the dark shadows of photos, so I will deliberately reduce the exposure when shooting with a digital camera. But through the observation window of the film machine, only the left and right arrows tell me whether the exposure is correct or not. I didn't know much about film before, so I would slightly reduce the exposure when shooting like a digital camera, but the contrast or color saturation of the photos is often very low.
2. If you want to increase the sensitivity when shooting, remember to mark the film shell.
Eric said that he usually marks the film before putting it into the camera so as not to forget it.
My heart: Be sure, be sure, be sure to mark it well, and tell the photo studio when you send it to clean it. I used to have a roll of black and white photographic film. I told the studio, but it wasn't marked on the film shell. They may have forgotten. As a result, the whole volume of 30 sheets was almost completely black …
If you haven't made a movie before, or you are just curious about shooting, don't rush to buy an expensive film camera like Leica.
Go buy the cheapest film machine and experience it. If you really like it after a few months. It's not too late to consider investing in a favorite movie machine.
My heart: buy a cheap film machine, or borrow it. Shoot for a while. I have long wanted to make my own movie. I studied online for a long time, read many articles and referred to both positive and negative comments before I decided to start making movies. I bought a second-hand Leica M6, a pile of film and a film scanner. Movies are good and bad. For me, not to mention the shooting experience, the most enjoyable part is that I don't have to worry about whether the battery is full or not, whether the memory card is cleared, and I can go out by picking up the camera and grabbing a few rolls of film. But filming is very troublesome. It's especially troublesome to stop and change films every 30. I have to send it to develop and scan myself (because I want to have complete control over the color), and it may take two weeks to look at the photos before and after. But the experience and feel of filming is really irreplaceable by digital cameras.
4. There are some good settings when shooting with 400 photographic film: in the case of very good weather, set F8,11000.
The weather setting with good light is F8, 1/500. Set F8, 1/250 in the prime time of the day (sunny from 2: 30 pm to 5 pm in summer). Set F8 for some shadows,1125. The setting with more shadows is F8, 1/60.
My heart: I think this is not much different from the setting of digital cameras. Although the advice of street photography is to try to keep the fixed aperture shutter setting, because there is no time to make adjustments when you see the picture. Usually my favorite setting is shutter 1/250, but I will adjust the aperture according to the situation. In fact, the aperture often needs to be adjusted, which requires long-term practice and experience to judge.
5. Don't feel that you are "wasting" the film, just take one shot of each favorite scene (digital cameras should usually be in continuous shooting).
If you see a great moment, take more pictures, try different angles and set it up. If the atmosphere or scene is really worth it, you can even shoot only one scene with the whole film.
I said to myself, seriously, every time I press the shutter, it's a few dollars. This feeling of burning money is too emotional. However, Eric once calculated in an article that he used Leica M9 and 5D Mark III, Leica M6 and a bunch of films as examples (you can look for them if you are interested). In fact, film is still cheaper than digital cameras.
6. When experiencing a film camera, it is recommended to try the following methods:
Find a friend as a model, take a series of photos of the same scene and posture, but each one uses a different aperture and shutter, and then write down your settings at that time, such as shutter, aperture and lighting conditions. After the photos are developed, they will be compared with the recorded data. In this way, you can find the ideal setting and shoot what you want.
I said to myself, this suggestion is good. I have never tried it myself.
7. Eric thinks we should try different movies.
But once you find a satisfactory film, the suggestion is not to change it. This will keep you in a consistent working style. Sticking a film for a long time can also make you know more about some subtle differences, such as increasing and decreasing sensation, how it feels to shoot during the day or at night, contrast and color, etc.
My heart: At present, I try Kodak Portra 400, which is my first choice for color film compared with Fuji X-tra 400 and Kodak Portra 400. But a roll costs 250 C 260, which is not cheap. The color of Fuji X-tra 400 is very close to Portra. Interested friends can try these two volumes.
8. Many people are worried that the X-ray of airport security will damage the film.
But in fact, if you use a film with a sensitivity of 400, there will be no problem with the X-rays passing the airport security check. However, the film with sensitivity of 800- 1600 may have problems.
My heart is: if you are really worried, there are many manufacturers who produce X-ray-proof film bags. Or it is suggested to bring a film, and the security personnel can check it manually when passing the security X-ray.
9. Eric said that he usually has only one of 50 volumes on average, which makes him very proud.
It is suggested to take this standard as a reference, and your chances of making excellent street shooting works will not be too high.
My heart: Please be very strict about your photos. I often mention this. When shooting, the aesthetic feeling of the photo will be over-amplified because of the instantaneous emotional connection. Try to develop it for as long as possible or take out the photos. Pull away from feelings and choose your own works harshly. Only in this way can people who look at photos be worthy and make progress on their own. But only 50 volumes 1800 photos have a very proud photo. I even suspect that he is exaggerating a bit.
10. Don't think filming is a waste of money.
As an investment. Film can definitely bring you experience and fun that digital cameras can't provide.
My heart: I can only say that filming is addictive.
