What are the effects of low light, horizontal light and high light on portrait photography respectively, and how should they be used?

There are many light levels, such as front light, side light, back light, top light, high light and low light. Various light levels can be used for characters. However, in the film, we should pay attention to choosing the appropriate light level according to the situation of the subject and the creative intention of shooting.

Guang Shun illumination

When taking high-profile portrait photos of young women, you can choose to follow the light. There are high lighting, horizontal lighting and low lighting, the first two are the most commonly used. Under proper high-brightness lighting, the subject usually leaves a beautiful butterfly shadow between his nose and lips. Under horizontal illumination, due to the equal light receiving surfaces of each part, the projection is backward, the image of the subject is poor, and the three-dimensional sense and texture are not strong.

sidelight

Side light can be divided into front side light, full side light and side backlight. In front lighting, there are many kinds of front lighting, such as high front lighting, horizontal front lighting and low front lighting. Frontal lighting is most used in people's photography, because the light source of frontal lighting illuminates the subject from the left front side or the right front side of the photo, so that the subject, background and environment are directly illuminated by light, and only a small part of them are in the shadow, and the overall light receiving area is smaller than the forward light, but larger than the omni-directional light. Therefore, the stereoscopic image of the object can be well displayed. High side light is the most widely used one in front side light. Under this light level, the shadow side of the subject's face often forms an inverted triangle. This kind of light can fully show the three-dimensional effect of the uneven face of the subject. Traditionally, this light level is mostly used to show men. When taking pictures of people with side light, we should pay attention to adding supplementary light in the dark to reduce the light ratio and ease the contrast between light and dark, but the illumination of supplementary light should not be too strong to drown the main light.

Backlighting

Backlighting has split backlight. Total backlight and so on. Side backlight illumination refers to the illumination of light from the left back side of an object or the back side of a friend. Side backlight lighting includes high backlight, horizontal backlight and low backlight. In figure photography, the most commonly used is high side backlight. Under the illumination of side backlight, the main body can fully express its three-dimensional sense.

Full backlight illumination means that light shines from the back of the subject to outline the three-dimensional shape of the subject. Backlighting is usually used to take photos of people, and appropriate supplementary light should be added to the dark part of the subject. Without fill light, only a portrait photo with silhouette effect can be formed.
