On the west side of Beizhai Buddhist Temple, there are also patches of wintersweet. There is a purple magnolia in the back of the Leshou Hall in the Summer Palace, and a magnolia in the south of the east gate of the promenade. They are the two oldest magnolia trees in the garden, which were planted during the Qianlong period to build Qingyi Garden (the predecessor of the Summer Palace) and have a history of more than 200 years.
According to legend, these magnolia trees were transplanted from Hangzhou West Lake by Ganlong. When flowers bloom, they smell delicious, so they are called "Fish-scented Sea". Legend has it that Cixi also likes Magnolia very much. According to folklore, her nicknames are Yulan and Laner, and Xianfeng named her Guirenlan.
When the British and French allied forces invaded, the magnolia trees in the Summer Palace were burned in large quantities, but these two purple and white magnolia trees survived and were relics of that year.
