Emperor Wanli of Ming Dynasty didn't go to court for 28 years in a row. Why did China win the battle at home and abroad?

Ming Shenzong was the third son of the Ming Dynasty. His mother was originally a maid-in-waiting, who was favored by her beautiful appearance and gave birth to a god.

In two years, he became the Crown Prince, and Ming had great expectations of him, so he changed his name to Jun, which means "for a husband, he said that the holy king controls the world, and for a servant, he turns to Jun." Zhu Yijun was very clever when he was a child. Once, the Ming Dynasty rode into the palace, stopped his horse and said to the Ming Dynasty, "My father is the master of the world. If something goes wrong, how can I explain it to the world? " Hearing this, Ming Muzong dismounted, picked up Zhu Yijun and entered the palace. His mother, Li's godson, is very strict. Every once in a while, she called her son to the front and taught him the commandments seriously. After every banquet, she was urged to ask him what he had learned today. Zhu Yijun was a little lazy when he was a child, so Li Taihou told him to kneel before him.

Qin Long six years, Ming Muzong died, Zhu Yijun succeeded to the throne, and changed to Wanli. In the first ten years of his rule, Zongshen was still young, and his mother Li Taihou listened to politics for him. At the beginning of his reign, there were serious cabinet disputes and bad relations among ministers. Sometimes, when you die, you cry and accidentally say, "How can a ten-year-old prince rule the world?" , which caused great dissatisfaction in Zhu Yijun. Finally, Zhang He polished it and removed the high arch. Empress Dowager Cixi entrusted all internal affairs to be handled, while the big one was told that the Committee was in a proper position, and that military and political affairs were in the charge of Zhang, who had all the power. With the full support of the little emperor and Zhang Taihou, Zhang carried out a series of reform measures, such as flogging, which greatly developed the social economy and improved people's lives.

Militarily, Zongshen appointed effective generals and sent troops to pacify the Bozhou Campaign of Zunyi Yang Yinglong Uprising, the Ningxia Campaign of Pingning Ningxia Uprising, the Korean Campaign of Anti-Japanese Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea and Nuer Daitu, thus maintaining the internal unity of the Ming Dynasty and the authority of the suzerain country. These three wars are collectively called the three characteristics of Wanli. The research of later generations shows that although the army has won, the military expenditure is huge. For example, Korea's World War I alone consumed 8.835 million taels of silver and hundreds of thousands of meters [13], which caused a great financial burden in the late Ming Dynasty. But in fact, in the late Ming Dynasty, the war in the late Jin Dynasty alone cost as much as 62 million yuan [1], far exceeding the three characteristics, and all three characteristics were wars that had to be fought. If we don't beat them or even defeat them, the Ming Dynasty is in danger of national subjugation. However, the actual military expenses of the three major levies were fully allocated by Neitang and Taicang Kuyin. After the three major levies, Neitang and Taiku still kept the silver. Facing the defeat in the Battle of Salhu, Zhu Yijun used Xiong Tingbi to guard Liaodong and station troops to build a city, which only slightly reversed the situation in Northeast China.

After Zhang's death, Wanli began to indulge in debauchery, weakened and went from bad to worse. Therefore, in the middle and late period of Zhu Yijun's administration, he seldom went to court. His main method of dealing with political affairs is to pass it on to the following in the form of government decrees. In the "Three Great Expeditions of Wanli", major events in the frontier were handled in the form of imperial edicts, rather than the form of "summoning power" that ministers hoped for. At the end of three expeditions, Zhu Yijun seemed less interested in ministers' written replies to the throne. In the same year, Lu Hongchun, director of the Ritual Department, said: Zhu Yijun "binged drinking day and night". Since the same year, the struggle for the crown prince has become a protracted "national struggle."

Although Emperor Wanli did not go to court for 28 consecutive years, some of his early policies had great influence on the country. Just like this, the Ming dynasty only had enough money to resist foreign wars, but its later corruption also laid a solid foundation for the demise of the Ming dynasty.
