Historical aerial images cover the whole country, which can intuitively understand the natural conditions and development in different periods. The shooting area covers key cities in almost all countries.

There are two kinds of image effects of historical flight: one is to make topographic maps or image maps, all of which are shot from high altitude in the form of orthographic projection, with large scale, mostly for towns; The other is based on military requirements, that is, it is used for military operations, with a small scale and mostly natural landforms.

There are more than 30,000 historical aerial photographs in China, all of which are black-and-white images with a resolution of 0.3-3m, starting from Heilongjiang in the north, reaching Hong Kong and Guangdong in the south, Gansu in the west and Liaoning in the east. The historical aerial images completely recorded the original features of China towns during the Republic of China, and a lot of information can be traced back to the late Qing Dynasty or earlier, which has significant historical value.

The scale of historical aerial images is between 1:500 and 1: 100000. Most of the images are well-defined and clear. The images of some famous cities, whose landmark buildings are easy to identify, and the details of houses, streets and so on are almost the same as today's shooting effect.

By using 3S and surveying and mapping technology, the archives of surveying and mapping achievements in different periods are integrated, and the factors such as topography, water system, traffic and surface coverage are monitored dynamically, quantitatively and spatially, and their changing laws, frequencies, distribution characteristics, regional differences and changing trends are statistically analyzed, so as to form monitoring data, maps and research reports reflecting the spatial distribution and development and changing laws of various resources, environment, ecology and economic factors for use by governments, enterprises and research reports.

As the basis of monitoring geographical conditions, historical aerial images can be targeted for special studies, such as coastline changes, urban-rural ratio, land use, vegetation, water system and so on. It is precisely because of historical images and historical basis that we can understand the changes and development of geographical conditions, adapt to nature and make nature change in a direction beneficial to the people, among which historical remote sensing images are essential.
