Caohai physical geography
Caohai is developed on the Wei (Ning)-Shui (Cheng) anticline, which is mainly composed of limestone in the Middle and Lower Carboniferous. The formation of the lake basin is controlled by two groups of fault structures in the northeast and northwest. Lake area is a developed agricultural area in Weining Yi, Hui and Miao Autonomous County, with flat terrain and deep soil layer. There are lake erosion terraces on the shore, and there are 85-meter-thick lake accumulation layers in and around the lake, which contain fossils common in the middle and late Pleistocene giant panda-saber-toothed elephant fauna, indicating that Caohai has a complex development history and may have experienced the evolution process of water accumulation-shrinkage-drying-re-accumulation. This process is obviously closely related to the tectonic uplift and karst development and evolution since Quaternary, and the general trend is from large to small. Caohai Lake was formed in the 27th year of Qing Daoguang (1847). At that time, it was raining continuously, flash floods broke out, and rocks were carrying sand, blocking the small water hole in Caohai. When the water was drained, there were tombstones of the Qing Dynasty submerged by the lake. At 1970, the lake was discharged into Yangjie River (Luoze River).
