Orientation of Peking University College of Earth and Space Sciences

2 1 century, human beings are facing increasingly serious problems of resources, environment and natural disasters. 2 1 century is also an era of vigorous development of space technology. Earth science and space science are not only basic sciences, but also widely used in modern national defense and national economic construction. Taking the earth and its near and far space as the research object, the basic research results obtained are the common wealth of all mankind. Modern earth science and space science research not only play a very important role in traditional fields such as aerospace, resource exploration, natural disaster prediction and defense. It also plays an increasingly important role in new fields such as nuclear explosion monitoring, site selection and seismic design of major and lifeline projects, monitoring and prediction of the earth's environment, digital earth and so on, and plays a very important role in national economy and modern national defense construction. National economic construction and modern national defense urgently need us to train more and better professionals in earth and space science.

The teaching and research of Earth and Space Science in Peking University has a long history. The Department of Geology has played an important role in the establishment of modern science and the development of modern economy in China. Geology Department of Shi Jing University was founded in 1909, which is the earliest geological education institution in China and the cradle of geological education in China. Since the founding of New China, more than 50 academicians have been trained for the country. Wang Lie, Ding Wenjiang, Li Siguang and other great masters have taught here, which has become a fertile ground for famous teachers and talented people. Geophysics is a new discipline. The Department of Geophysics of Peking University was founded in June 1959. In the early days of its establishment, famous geophysicists of the older generation in China, such as Gu, Wang Zichang, personally served as the professional director of geophysics, and presided over the formulation of the teaching plan and research direction of the subject. Over the past 40 years, the Department of Geophysics has trained a large number of outstanding scientists, engineering and technical experts and senior management experts for the country, who have made important contributions in the fields of earthquake monitoring, geophysics, space environment and space application in China. Peking University Institute of Remote Sensing, founded in 1983, is one of the earliest scientific research and teaching units engaged in the theoretical research and technical application of remote sensing in China, and has formed disciplinary advantages in the theoretical research, development and teaching of remote sensing technology and geographic information system. At present, the Institute of Remote Sensing has two majors, cartography and geographic information system, photogrammetry and remote sensing, and has trained more than 0 graduate students 100, held more than 40 domestic training courses on remote sensing and geographic information system, and trained a number of high-level remote sensing and GPS professionals for the country.

Peking University College of Earth and Space Sciences was established on the basis of several departments with excellent academic and teaching traditions and brilliant achievements in earth science-related fields. It will adhere to the fine traditions, pay attention to its own development conditions, give full play to the advantages of interdisciplinary and comprehensive disciplines, and realize the strong alliance and the reorganization and optimal allocation of teaching and scientific research resources. The faculty and staff of Peking University Institute of Earth and Space Sciences are full of confidence. They took the establishment of the new college as an opportunity, set out from a high starting point, and made great efforts to build the college into a talent training and scientific research center of earth and space science with great international influence. We believe that with the support from all walks of life and the joint efforts of all the teaching staff, Peking University Institute of Earth and Space Sciences, which has a glorious tradition, will make greater achievements and play a greater role in national construction and society.
