Jewelry photos, how to get good results?

Many jewelry lovers are worried about how to take good photos of jewelry and convey the beauty of sparkling jewelry without a photo studio. However, shooting jewelry is not as difficult as it seems. There are some simple shooting techniques that help to get good jewelry photos.

First, prepare props and materials.

1, windows and natural light

It is not a good idea to shoot shiny jewelry with a flash, because jewelry will reflect strong light, causing glare and shadows in the background, as shown in the following two examples.

If you are not an experienced photographer, but you are qualified to shoot in a professional studio, please use natural light (such as light from a window) to take photos of jewelry. Although bright sunlight can produce glare and shadows, it can be diluted by covering windows with white screens.

2. Selection of shooting background: white paper or cardboard.

The reflective color of most jewelry surfaces means that all other colors will be absorbed, so in order to avoid changing the color of the product, it is necessary to remove the objects on the white background. White reflects light, while dark color absorbs light, so if you use a white background (such as white paper), you can better illuminate the subject.

3. Camera and tripod

When shooting jewelry, it is not so much the camera itself as the lens. When buying the first macro lens, we suggest choosing a lens with a focal length of 60 mm, which can increase your focal length by 0.5 times, while the more expensive macro lens can increase the full width (1: 1). And the use of high-quality tripod can ensure the clear focus and clarity of photos.

4. Model

Most handicraft shops sell bust models, which is a good way to make jewelry look beautiful and lifelike, highlight jewelry and give people a sense of elegance. However, it is best to shoot jewelry on a white background.

5. Unreal

If you don't have a model, you can create a unique jewelry tablet stand. Take a piece of cardboard, wrap it in white paper, stick or seal the end of the necklace on the back, and then shoot.

Step 6 Use double-sided adhesive tape

When shooting a jewelry ring, a drop of glue on the double-sided tape can be easily fixed. In this case, the ring can be fixed at a desired angle.

Second, jewelry shooting skills

1, using a special lens

If you buy a digital SLR camera or a mirrorless camera, the lens is generally wide-angle and the zoom is short. Numerically, the most common focal length range is 18 to 55 mm These lenses are very suitable for family photography, but not for shooting small objects such as rings or earrings.

To do this, you need to buy special lenses. Looking for a model with a focal length of about 60 mm for sale. The camera can be installed not far from the subject and the magnification will be 0.5 times. If you can afford it, please buy a macro lens that can shoot at the ratio of 1: 1.

Step 2 Use a sturdy tripod

Camera shake is the photographer's biggest enemy. When dealing with small objects such as jewelry, any slight fluctuation caused by holding the camera looks like blur in the final photo. To avoid this, please choose a sturdy tripod. In the tripod, please pay attention to whether there is a detachable ball head compatible with the platform camera and whether there is alcohol concentration in the legs or tripod head.

The advantage of tripod ball head is to use fluid to obtain the required angle. After the head is unlocked, the camera can be adjusted freely to further fix the selected angle.

3, evenly and fully illuminate the jewelry

The standard lighting scheme of macro photography should include at least two light sources-flash or continuous light. One is on the left side of the object and the other is on the right side.

4. Choose the correct aperture to ensure focus.

When shooting jewelry with a macro lens, it should not be considered that a larger aperture (f2.8 or f4) will make the photo brighter.

If you choose a larger aperture (f2.8), more light will enter the lens, but only a small part of the subject will be in clear focus. The rest of the focus "falls", and this effect is called "scattered scenery".

The shooting effect is suitable for portrait photography, not for jewelry photography. So the big aperture of f2.8 or f4 is not suitable, because you can't see all the details of the decoration.

To get the best results when shooting in aperture priority mode (Av or the mark in most camera mode settings), please select aperture f 1 1 or f 16. These lower values will reduce scattered scenes, thus better depicting all the details of jewelry.

Third, common mistakes that should be avoided when shooting jewelry.

1, the prepared product is not very good. Wash and polish the jewelry before shooting. This can save time, otherwise you will spend time editing images later-removing dust and fingerprints from jewelry.

2. The light is not good. The lighting should be complete, just like a series of photos.

The light is too dazzling. Incorrect lighting can cause glare in photos and hide product details.

4. The color rendering is incorrect. The color of the product should be as close to the truth as possible to avoid misleading the buyer.

5. The image size is not appropriate. Jewelry (especially earrings) may indeed come in different sizes. Therefore, please stick to the same image size so that everything can be aligned and easily viewed on the website of the online store.

6. The background is not suitable. Take photos of the same brand of jewelry in the same background.

7. There are not enough photos. Take more photos of all the details and aspects of the product.

The uniformity of photos greatly simplifies the inspection of buyers. If you are not sure, please be simple and use a clean background on all product pictures.
