However, in 1882, the project was forced to stop because of policy and war.
1963, the French-British Committee chose to build a two-lane passage under the strait. A third line is set between the two lines as an auxiliary line, with a total length of 52km. This scheme is the prototype of the future tunnel. 1964, the British and French governments signed an announcement on the construction of the tunnel. The tunnel project officially started on 1974.
1986 In February, the foreign ministries of Britain and France signed a treaty to build the English Channel Tunnel. The two governments ratified this treaty in July 1987. Construction officially started.
1994 was officially opened to traffic on may 7, which lasted more than 8 years and cost about1000 million pounds (about1500 million dollars). It is also the largest project built by private capital in the world.
