Free travel in Australia

I recommend a travel note for your reference

This is our family’s first real self-guided trip abroad. We have also been to Singapore and Malaysia before. When preparing everything from visas to air tickets, hotels, and car rental reservations, I all referred to World Travel Garden. I have benefited a lot, so I can only share my own travels to give something back.

1. Itinerary Arrangement

Try to let the youngest daughter (seven years old) experience Australian society as much as possible and try to visit all the famous 'scenic spots', so we arranged a trip by sea (Great Barrier Reef), land ( Train, self-driving), air (airplane, cable car).

Book all air tickets, trains, hotel accommodations, and car rentals before traveling to save time. Two families (4 adults and 2 children) travel together and basically book a 2 bedroom apartment; they basically cook their own food every night.

The entire trip followed the itinerary strictly and went very smoothly. Short-distance transportation on car-free sections is basically covered by taxi, and the final settlement is that the total cost per family is about 42,000 yuan.

< p>2. Driving route map

Print out the daily driving route map in detail through Google Maps before traveling. This is a perfect combination with GPS. It is really invincible for those who like or have super memory. , just using the road map will be smooth. The biggest difficulty in driving abroad is in urban areas. It is difficult to change lanes in time when driving at a fast speed. It is highly recommended to use GPS, which saves a lot of effort in memorizing maps and routes. Take some time to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

3. Preparation before departure

1. Visa

Prepare the materials and send the visa in full according to the instructions of the seniors at the World Travel Garden. The deposit was less than RMB 20,000, so I borrowed RMB 50,000 temporarily as a time deposit and obtained the bank deposit certificate. I received the passport 4 days after signing.

2. Book the flight tickets. p>

I started searching online in mid-June. At first, I asked "Yifei International Air Ticket Network" for help. I could consult directly over the phone and the service was very considerate. However, because it was the peak season (it turned out that although summer vacation is winter in Australia, air tickets were only Second to the peak season of Spring Festival).

Later, I discovered that Macau has a low-cost round-trip flight from Sydney for 199 Australian dollars one way. In addition, its airport taxes and fees are cheaper than flying from China, which converted into RMB for a round-trip is about 4,300 yuan, so I immediately placed an order online. Extra seats are wider and more comfortable than JETSTAR. However, flights to Sydney are not available every day. They are about once every two days. You can check directly on their website /sc/.

I choose Virgin blue for both-way tickets within Australia. Through .au/, you can check the flight range and price comparison of major Australian airlines on a certain day at the same time, and you can directly enter the ticket booking. It is very convenient to use. .

3. Hotel reservation

Search online, using wotif.com.au; hotel.backpackers.com; LP as a guide, and use google maps to check the specific location. Based on the standard of about 100 yuan per family per night, I finally found that it is most economical and practical to book a two-bedroom apartment because you have to cook your own food. This later proved to be a very wise move. The children liked it very much and said it felt like home. Two of the stations are arranged separately (Melbourne, Gold Coast) to relax individually, and they are also apartments with kitchen facilities.

The hotel and room rates are as follows:

4. Rent a car

Book it in Budget in advance, because we need an 8-seater car, which is usually less. Picked up in Sydney city and returned in Melbourne city, one week's rent and surcharges without insurance were less than 700 yuan. To be on the safe side, we bought an additional 36 yuan insurance. If there is a large surcharge for picking up and returning the car at the airport, it is better to take a taxi. It cost 67 yuan for the 6 of us to take a taxi to the airport in Melbourne. How many people, we often call taxis with 9-12 seats)

5. Train ticket booking

Also book in advance, the train runs between Brisbane and Sydney Book the train on the countrylink website.

4. Travel (Liu Shui Zhang)

(1) Sydney

Arrived at Sydney International Airport at about 10 a.m. on July 22, and went to the residence to take a short rest. That is, go for a walk around Circular Quay. The sun was shining brightly, the sky and the sea were blue and bright, and the big shells spread their wings and were ready to fly. If it weren't for the reminder of the clothes on my body, I would have thought it was not winter.

Walk around the city all day on July 23, starting from Central Station, Chinatown, Darling Harbour, Town Hall, City Center, Fish Market (Lunch); Hyde Park, Gallery of NSW; Mrs Macquarie's Point ; When I returned to Budget in Kinghurst to pick up the car at about 5 pm, the Filipino female clerk who received me actually said that she couldn’t understand the notarization of my driver’s license issued in China and couldn’t hand it over to me, saying that it had to be issued in Australia. At first I politely explained the content of the notarization, but the person still insisted. Out of anger, I asked her if she didn't know English or didn't trust China's authorities? Insisting that many friends have rented cars in Australia with this document, she asked if it was a budget? She gave a firm answer. She only gave up after some negotiations attracted the attention of the white man at the counter next to her. From then on, I always look for white-skinned people who are friendly and easy to handle. After dinner, we drove to the bottom of the Harbor Bridge at Mrs Macquarie's Chair and The Rocks to watch the opera house at night, which was so quiet and beautiful.

(2) Hunter Valley Hunter Valley

On July 24, I woke up early to find it was raining, and I was a little worried that today’s trip would be a spoiler. After we set off on the road, the rain got heavier and heavier, and it poured down halfway. It is the first time for LG to drive on a foreign road, and it is a right-hand drive. Although a local friend guided the drive for nearly an hour last night, I was still a little nervous when I just hit the road this morning. I became excited as soon as I left the city. The scenery on both sides of the road is so beautiful, with rolling hills and pastures, and quiet lakes and forests appearing from time to time. There are many cars on the road and the speed is fast, but they all obey the rules. LG lamented that this is called driving. It turns out that driving can also be a kind of enjoyment! From then on, my friends and I rushed to drive, which made me, the only one among the four of us who had driving experience abroad, feel uncomfortable. In fact, I just wanted LG and my daughter to truly experience Australia and Western society during this trip...

We followed the GPS guidance and walked for 1 hour and 30 minutes. The weather was good, the rain stopped, and large patches of pastures with yellow-green and light-yellow grass spread out on both sides of the country road where vehicles were driving. Occasionally, there were cattle and sheep dotted on them, and everything was quiet. It's beautiful, pure, and very quiet under the slightly gray misty blue sky. From time to time, my daughter asked me to stop and watch the cattle and sheep.

There are more than 100 wineries in the valley, and they basically provide free tastings. We visited several wineries based on the recommendations on LP. Unfortunately, we arrived late and could not see the red wine production process (every morning At 11 o'clock, this program is available only if there is a tour logo on part of the brochure). My friend who was traveling with me was a little embarrassed when I started to taste the wine. After my constant urging, I put down my face and picked up the wine glass. Gradually I found that the people in the restaurant were very happy and enthusiastic. The more I drank, the happier they were. They never took the initiative to talk, let alone There will be words with the intention of selling, and they will only answer enthusiastically when the guests ask questions, and thank you happily when they leave. We all felt that we came all the way to drink their wine, which is really embarrassing for them!

Travel information about the Hunter Valley can be found on its website: .au/

(3) Canberra

On July 25, a friend from Sydney decided to go with We traveled to Melbourne together. Originally, the GPS showed that the journey was about 3 hours, but my Australian friend was very worried about the GPS and insisted on following the route he knew. It ended up taking 4 hours. It was raining in Sydney, but it turned out to be extremely sunny half an hour after hitting the road. The scenery on the road was also endless and eye-catching countryside pastures.

Have lunch with bread and fruit by Lake Burley Griffin, and then seize the time to visit its library, science and technology center, high court, art gallery, and Parliament House. ), the Embassy District, and the National Museum of Australia (National Museum of Australia). Unfortunately, there was not enough time to carefully examine the exhibits in each museum. The War Memorial also closed because the sunset was early (5 o'clock in both cases), which was a pity.

LG and I both like visiting museums, especially foreign ones. The exhibitions are vivid and detailed, and the museums are full of treasures. The standards are high, unlike those in China where most people spend money to gain fame. There is a painting exhibition by a famous person, and the treasures in the museum are well preserved, so no one can ask questions, let alone free of charge. The service is also first-rate, and items are stored so you can enjoy it easily. For the first time, LG was in a hurry to see the exhibits, but a beautiful girl with a beautiful smile stopped her. She said that the clothes you were wearing were too big and the room was warmer than the outside. It was recommended that you take them off and store them before you went to enjoy the exhibits. I wonder when I have enjoyed such considerate and considerate service in China?

In order to let the two children experience foreign universities, we specially arranged to stay at the National University in the evening. As soon as they entered the room, the two of them jumped and screamed with joy. The huge living room, spacious dining room, kitchen, shower room and balcony were completely different from the hotels they usually stay in when traveling domestically. They were all carpeted and very clean. Their reaction was as expected. The material is more comfortable than at home, and I secretly enjoy this reward for my hard work. It is worth it.

(4) Yarra Valley

I woke up early on July 26 and headed to the Yarra Valley, which is about an hour’s drive from Melbourne. The drive took nearly 8 hours, and almost all the On the road. When arranging the itinerary, I wanted to stay in as many small towns as possible while I had a car, so I found a place to stay before going to Penguin Island (Phillip Island) - Yarra Valley. It happens to be one of the three major wine producing areas in Australia (Barosa, Yarra Valley, Hunter Valley). I also planned to go to Barosa on my earliest trip, but due to time considerations, I gave up and left it to Perth-Adelaide-Tower next time. Smania to complete.

The road from Canberra to Yarra Valley is beyond imagination. At the beginning, it is mainly like the pasture scenery, but it is more elegant and the hills are more undulating. When you reach Yarra Glen (it has entered the valley, Before arriving at our residence, Healsville, we entered the winding path of the forest park. The car drove left and right like a roller coaster, but the forest trees on both sides were surprisingly beautiful in the light haze of dusk, with the dappled light seeping through the leaves. , like entering a fairyland. It was around 5 pm in Healsville, and it was already dark. We went directly to the supermarket to buy food and then went to the motel to cook.

On July 27, I was woken up early by the birds outside the window and found that the scenery of the town was superb. After breakfast, we split into two groups. LG and I, a couple traveling with friends from Sydney, went to visit wineries. My daughter went to the Safari Park with her friend's house, and we made an appointment to meet up at 11 o'clock. Later, we found that there was not enough time, so we postponed the meeting time by 1 hour and 30. I would rather skip lunch time and eat bread instead.

The wineries and vineyards here are larger, more beautiful, and more natural than those in the Hunter Valley. In contrast, the Hunter Valley has a slightly stronger tourist atmosphere, and it has a pure feeling of producing wine. The winery architecture pays more attention to the coordination with the surrounding natural scenery.

(5) Penguin Island Phillip Island

On July 27, we ate bread for lunch in the Yarra Valley and then drove to Phillip Island, the Penguin Island, to see the smallest fairy penguins in the world. Arrive at the accommodation at 3 o'clock. The location is perfect, just steps away from the beach. The scenery here is completely like an island, with beaches, waves, rocks, and pastures integrated into one. I am glad that I chose to stay here instead of setting off from Melbourne like most people do, and then go back after watching Penguin Parade.

After checking in at the Motel, we went to the information center in town. After purchasing tickets and food for the Penguin Parade in the evening, we drove for a drive on the peninsula and saw a large herd of cows at close range.

Go to Summerland Beach before the viewing time at 5:10 (the forecast for the day is 5:45). It was the first time since I came to Australia that I saw so many tourists. Many of them had yellow skin. Maybe it was because we were in a group. They left after about half of them. Most of the people in the stands suddenly disappeared. We were reluctant to leave. Thank you for your support. After watching the Parade in the cold wind, I also watched them sitting around and in their nests, singing and fighting gently. These little penguins are so cute, the little girl learns to waddle. Since touching was not allowed, I bought a plush doll for her to hold and sleep with, and she was still smiling when she fell asleep.

(6) Melbourne

I drove to Melbourne early in the morning on July 28. The journey took 1 hour and 40 minutes. The road was easy to walk, just follow the road signs. The hotel is booked on the south bank of the Yarra River, which is very convenient for travel. When you put the car down, you can follow the LP route map in the city.

The city appearance is not as beautiful as originally expected. The modern atmosphere that Union Square is trying to create is a bit mixed, and the old buildings seem to lack some confidence. The "tutu" of the Cultural and Art Center does not seem to be very special, but the title of my daughter's diary that night It is "the old and the new are compatible." She said that the new is very new and the old is very old.

It rained a little at noon and stopped in about 20 minutes. The most comfortable ones are walking along the Yarra River, strolling in the Botanical Gardens and looking at paintings in the National Museum of Victoria, all of which are of a very high standard. It's a pity that I didn't get the free cable car. I walked around the city for most of the day and didn't see one.

It was very comfortable to walk along the river in the evening. The fire-breathing show in front of Crown Casino was actually average, but the scenery along the river was very elegant. LG repeatedly praised the location of the hotel I booked.

(7) Great Ocean Road

On July 29, the weather was extremely sunny. Set off early in the morning, and after passing Geelong, the scenery starts to become more beautiful. In Torquay, I went into the information center to pick up a map and asked for advice on the scenic spots along the way. The female volunteer on duty was very kind and introduced the scenery along the way in detail and marked it on the map. We took the map and hit the road. The scenery along the way was endless. It is worthy of the title of one of the most beautiful coastlines. It is even more beautiful than the coastline of US Route 1. It is better than the shape and color of the rocks on the shore. At noon, we had pizza at the Lorne roadside shop. The taste and atmosphere were both good.

We arrived at Twelve Apostles at 4:30 in the afternoon as planned to watch the sunset. It was a pity that the sky, which had always been sunny, suddenly stopped shining, and the expected bright sunset turned into a faint and light gray color. Clear sky. But its magnificence was still very shocking. Even though the wind blew quite hard, we were reluctant to leave and stayed until the dust started to fade before leaving.

Port Campbell is a small town. The hotel is opposite the only small supermarket in the town. When checking in, the landlord reminded that it closes at 6:30. You can enjoy attentive service everywhere in Australia.

I woke up on the morning of July 30 and spent half an hour on the beach in front of the hotel. The sky was bluer and purer than yesterday. I just couldn't let go of the magnificence of Twelve Apostles, so I decided to drive back. I wandered there slowly for more than an hour before I had to let go of this attachment. Went to The Arch and other attractions before heading back to Melbourne. The pasture scenery along the way was more mountainous, and there were some sections of the road that gave people the surprise of a sudden beautiful scenery or a beautiful picture. There is still time to go back to the city and spend the remaining time at the War Memorial.

(8) Cairns

The flight was around 9pm on July 30. I took a 9-seater taxi from the Melbourne Budget drop-off office in the city and it cost 67 yuan to the airport. , which saves more than 130 yuan compared to returning the car at the airport. At the airport, I took my children to experience the self-service printing of boarding passes (actually tickets), which was very fun. I arrived at Cairns Airport in the early morning of July 31, took a taxi (23 yuan) to the hotel's self-service mailbox, and successfully obtained the room key according to the password the landlord had informed me in the email in advance.

1. Kuranda

I woke up at around 8:00 on the 31st and walked to Central Station. After breakfast, I caught the sightseeing train to Kuranda (leaving at 9:30). . In Kuranda, we avoided tourists on the Jungle Walk. It was very quiet and pleasant. It was rare for my little girl to enjoy this kind of asceticism. I saw a Bat protection house with all kinds of things hanging on the net house. The caretaker specially invited I bought two for my daughter to take a closer look at. The strange thing is that they are very cute, different from those usually seen in China.

It was really enjoyable to take the Skyrail on the return trip. It felt so good to walk through the vast forest, and my daughter refused to cooperate in taking pictures, saying that taking pictures was a waste of her time!

2. Great Barrier Reef

The host of the hotel (a middle-aged couple) provides free group booking services (this is one of the reasons why I chose it in the first place, because when the time comes It’s already early in the morning and I don’t have time to contact anyone else). After we came back on the night of July 31st, they were very attentive and recommended various overseas tours one by one. We just found one that was offering a special price of 139 packages of brunch and pick-up. Unfortunately, it was already full. It was the peak tourist season here. Later, I found a ticket that costs 119 yuan for one child and free glass boat (20 yuan per person). On the boat the next day, I found out that only we were exempted from the glass boat because the hotel fought for it. As a thank you, I gave the landlady a small silk scarf. Constant thanks.

There are only 6 of us Chinese in this group, plus 4 Japanese with Asian faces. Stop at two outer reef points and have a long time for diving and snorkeling. The weather was also very good, the sky and sea were so blue, and we even saw whales on the way out. Due to the strong waves, the daughter of a friend traveling with us vomited, and LG, my daughter, and I also felt uncomfortable. As soon as we stopped, we quickly rented a wetsuit (it has a thermal effect, after all, it was only 24 degrees and the wind was strong, so my little girl was afraid of freezing.

I see so many beauties wearing a three-point style without feeling cold at all, I admire them! ) The little girl was too thin and was already shivering from the cold before she got into the water. However, she insisted on getting into the water. Maybe she was the only child and could not swim. This moved a white coach to accompany her and take her to the bottom of the water. He walked around in a beautiful place, and when he saw her raising her head, she asked with concern, "Ok?". I followed and found that the place he led was really more beautiful than the place I wandered around.

(9) Gold Coast

Fly to Brisbane at 6 a.m. on August 2, arrive at around 8 a.m., and take a van directly to the hotel you booked on the Gold Coast (4 The fare for two adults and two small children is 170 yuan, which is a little expensive. Since my friend’s daughter is a little unwell, it’s better to change cars less)

We arrived at the hotel at 10 o’clock and couldn’t check in. We walked around first and got on the Q- Deck, the Gold Coast is even more beautiful from above. I returned to the hotel at around 1 o'clock and saw that my friend was very angry that she still hadn't received the room. It turned out that the waitress at the counter, who was not smiling for the first time in this trip and even had a stiff attitude, had promised to move out a room first ( Here I booked 2 high-rise apartments). My friend said that some people could get the key as soon as they arrived, but they couldn't. He also saw many warnings in Chinese and felt that foreign women were being discriminatory. I went to negotiate, but the cleaning was still not completed. My friend still looked unhappy, and I felt guilty. As soon as 2 o'clock arrived, the waiter handed out the room key on time. It was indeed a high-rise building, on the 17th floor, facing the sea, with a great view. There were only 3 rooms of this type, and I realized that other rooms that could be checked in in advance were indeed different. Our unhappiness just now disappeared. But my friend has always been upset and insists that Chinese tourists are being discriminated against. The reason is that there are warnings in Chinese everywhere. I took a closer look and found that they are both in English and Chinese. They are posted in places where reminders are needed. The original English text is very polite. However, the Chinese translation is very Taiwanese and has a condescending attitude, which can really cause an unpleasant feeling. When I came back in the evening, I wanted to discuss this special reminder in Chinese with the counter. I saw the lobby was full of noise and people. It turned out to be a tourist bus bringing dozens of Chinese middle school students. Our lovely future may be really exciting, and Running and screaming... I was too embarrassed to mention anything to the counter.

The beach is so beautiful. We spent the afternoon, evening, and the next morning on the beach, playing in the water, playing in the sand, walking, picking up shells, and watching the sunset and sunrise. We enjoyed a short Relaxing vacation.

(10) Brisbane

Take a train from the Gold Coast to Brisbane at noon on August 2. The Motel is in Spring Hill, not far from Central Station. The landlady was very nice. She showed the nearest super market and the route to the city center on the map, so I could check in in advance. It was still early, so I put down my luggage and quickly took a taxi to Lone Pine (Yellow Cab charges an additional 11 yuan for more than 6 people. The taxi fare for this trip is a bit expensive, 46 yuan; the return trip by bus to Queen is only 2 yuan per person) Street). It is very touristy and very small, far less large, natural and full of animals than the Yarra Valley. The biggest advantage is that you can hold a koala and take photos (you can get a coupon for 3 yuan off when you buy the ticket), feed kangaroos and watch some animal performances. The little girl is the happiest.

On August 3, I walked in the city for most of the day, covering a distance of about 8 kilometers. The Town Hall is average, the central square is okay, and the exhibitions in the State Museum and Art Gallery are very Queensland-specific. Some of them display many specimens of animals, marine life, and shells, which are beautiful and interesting. Walking along South Bank Park and the Brisbane River is quite pleasant. There are many ships on display at the Maritime Museum, and there is an awning on the bridge back to the city, which is very comfortable. In order to catch the train at the Transit Center on Roma Street before 2 o'clock, the little girl was very tired on the way but insisted on it. LG couldn't bear it and carried some distance on her back. Along the way, the little girl performed very well. She was originally worried that she would get tired due to the tight schedule, but she didn't expect that her 13-year-old sister who was traveling with us collapsed first and caught a cold. The little girl has always maintained high enthusiasm and had a lot of fun. The main reason is that she will seize the time to sleep in the car, plane, and train. Therefore, those traveling with children should fully consider the child’s own endurance when deciding on the itinerary. My friends who travel with me always say, "If your daughter can do it, we will be fine" when I am planning my itinerary. This is not necessarily true. I also ignored it, and I felt guilty when her daughter finally caught a cold.

Looking back on this trip, it was better than we expected. Before departure, we were a little worried that the weather in Australia would be less beautiful in the winter. I didn’t expect that the winter in Australia would be so beautiful, and I didn’t expect that I would still get a tan. It would be more fun to go skiing again, but my daughter has already experienced it and canceled it. Before the trip, many friends heard that they would go to Australia in July or August, and they all said that it was winter and it would be impossible to go into the water. But LG and I were willing to travel far away with our daughter. We did our homework with the mentality of just seeing the winter scenery, and found out that this time period is actually very good. There are no four seasons in Cairns, only two (dry season and rainy season), and July and August are the dry season, one of the best periods for weather.

When I went there this time, I saw a completely different scenery from the light rainy day when I went there in October 2004; even in the south, as long as there is sunshine during the day, and in fact the sun shines every day, the scenery is very beautiful, except for wearing thick clothes. , have just as much fun playing.

It is recommended that parents who need to accommodate their children's holidays would be better off going to Australia during the summer vacation than during the Spring Festival. The weather, scenery, and money saving are all better
