I. Introduction to the film

Red Sorghum is a war literary film produced by Xi 'an Film Studio, directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Jiang Wen, Gong Li and Teng Rujun. It was released in China on 1987.

The film is adapted from Mo Yan's novel of the same name. The story took place in Gaomi, Shandong Province during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period. It tells the story of the hero and heroine who run a sorghum liquor shop together after twists and turns. However, during the Japanese invasion of China, both the heroine and the restaurant staff were killed by the Japanese because they participated in the resistance movement.

Second, a brief introduction to the novel

Red Sorghum is a novel written by Mo Yan, a China writer. Red Sorghum is set in the folk life of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and Gaomi Northeast in 1930s and 1940s, and a series of anti-Japanese heroes portrayed in the story are the embodiment of justice and evil.

Yu Zhanao, the hero, is a bloody man, whose body is full of justice and barbarism. Yu Zhanao killed and set fire to his beloved woman, and took possession of Dai Fenglian, who later became his wife. In revenge, Yu Zhanao practiced marksmanship and caught all the bandits molesting his wife. Yu Zhanao didn't really realize the essence of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Yu Zhanao exudes a very distinct human nature, but it is also full of savage and ignorant beast.

In his novels, Mo Yan created a red sorghum world on the edge of ethics, a bandit hero who did all the bad things but returned to his country. They love each other and kill each other, full of the flavor of the times that is both deviant and full of infinite vitality.

Red Sorghum reproduces the era of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression from a folk perspective, showing a strong desire for survival. Red Sorghum is a classic showing the tenacious vitality of Gaomi people in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, full of blood and national spirit.
