How to use line expressive force in photography
The first is the refinement of lines.
1. Line is the external form of objective things, which restricts the surface shape of objects. Every existing object has its own outline shape and presents a certain combination of lines. For example, a square table, a cabinet with a long main shape, has edges and corners, faces and dividing lines, spheres and columns have solitary lines, trees have vertical lines, rivers and rocks have curves, everything in life such as cars, boats, trees, melons and fruits has its own shape and contour lines, and different movements of objects also show different line combinations. The line structure of people standing and running is different. Because people have a deep impression and experience on the line changes of various objects and moving objects along the outer contour in their long-term life, conversely, people can associate the shape and movement of an object through a certain line combination. Therefore, all plastic arts attach great importance to the generality and expressiveness of lines, which is an important language of plastic arts.
Photography must also attach importance to the refinement and application of lines, and be good at highlighting and emphasizing the expressive outer contours of different objects by using its own unique angles, lights and lenses, so as to make them clear and concise, thus reproducing accurate, vivid and vivid visual images. When it comes to the use of lines, some are generally understood as the arrangement and combination of some lines or the beauty and interest of some lines. In fact, creating a visual image on the screen is inseparable from the refinement of lines. For example, to reproduce people's expressions, movements and postures, it is necessary to choose angles and light. And outline the outline of people's facial lines and gestures, spread them out on the screen, and make people feel the content of their expressions, gestures and actions, and be infected. Otherwise, the image will disappear. Therefore, lines are the soul of all kinds of plastic arts.
2. The function of the line
The function of lines can be summarized as the following three aspects:
(1), lines can affect the overall structure of the picture and the overall posture of the main image. No matter the natural phenomena seen in the sea, forest, mountains and deep valleys, we can choose horizontal, straight, curved and oblique lines to play a major role in the picture structure according to their characteristics.
(2) Lines can create different texture, volume and sense of space by depicting details such as subject, companion and background.
(3) Lines also play an important role in creating the melody, rhythm and artistic conception of a work.
Line is not an objective entity, but only the contour lines of various objects formed by the action of light, the lines formed by dividing lines of different shades and too many color blocks, and even the nonexistent human vision and intermittent fuzzy dotted lines. Most of these different lines can only be seen later in the work. If you don't carefully analyze, observe and experience when you are engaged in photography creation activities in real life, you may ignore or be unaware of the existence of lines. So you can train the photographer's eyes and make full use of lines to complete the composition.
3. Characteristics of lines
Summarizing and analyzing the characteristics and functions of lines is very helpful for photographic creation.
Lines have different characteristics:
(1), vertical line: it can promote the line of sight to move up and down, display the height, and create a towering, straight and upward impression.
(2) Horizontal line: It can cause the line of sight to move up and down, resulting in the effects of opening, stretching and lengthening.
(3) Oblique lines: It will make people feel that they are expanding or contracting from one end to the other, resulting in a sense of uncertainty and movement.
(4) Curved rod: make the line of sight change direction from time to time, and lead the line of sight to the center of gravity.
(5) Round lines: It can cause people's eyes to turn and have a stronger sense of movement.
Using vertical lines to express heroic images and industrial construction scenes is helpful to set off the artistic effect of tall, majestic, upward and straight images, and highlight the mental outlook of characters and the majestic momentum of scenes. Show scenes of mass activities, agricultural production, scenery and other works with horizontal stitches to emphasize the vast, stretched, beautiful and quiet atmosphere of the picture. Use diagonal lines to express dynamic sports activities, dances, etc. It will also be helpful for those works that need to strengthen the structural changes of the picture and portray vivid images. When using curves and circular lines, the depth and movement of the picture are emphasized, which makes the picture structure richer and more artistic.
The form of lines seems complicated. In fact, it can only be further summarized, but there are only two types: straight line and curve. Straight lines include vertical lines, horizontal lines and diagonal lines. Although the line types of curves are rich, they are basically all kinds of deformation of wave lines.
Second, the use of lines.
People use lines to express the characteristics of things.
1, a picture should choose and extract representative lines according to the characteristics of the subject to express the content and infect the audience. Any art is not a naturalistic copy of life, but a generalization and refinement of life, and photography is no exception. All the scenes selected on the screen by the frame must be selected, arranged and refined by the author, and the most important thing is to use lines. Clear and concise line forms are presented in the picture, giving play to the expressive force and generalization of the main line.
2. Use some line structures to convey feelings.
In plastic arts, lines are an important lyric means. Because people have accumulated deep impressions and feelings about the line structure of some objects in long-term real life, as long as they are photographed, they will associate with a certain line structure, thus stimulating the corresponding emotional color. Artists attach great importance to the lyric ability of line freeze-frame in their long-term artistic practice. In art theory, the expressive force of lines is described in detail as follows: horizontal lines are stable, vertical lines are lofty, curves are beautiful, radiation is unrestrained, and diagonal lines are dynamic.
A photographer should have a poet's mind and take the line structure of various objects in real life as the object of life. Trees, flowers, mountains, stones and other natural objects should carefully study the shape, posture and extension direction of their outer contour lines, and express their feelings with various shapes.
3. Use lines displayed in characteristic moments to express actions and plots.
The shape, posture and contour of moving objects are constantly moving and changing, so extracting the line structure of moving objects is of great significance for grasping the time, in addition to other modeling methods. At different moments, the line structure presented by moving objects is different, and its modeling expressive force is also different.
At the moment of (1) tidal point, the lines of moving bodies are generally smooth and powerful, such as high jump, long jump, drama and dance machine. When the shutter is pressed at the climax, the shape and lines are beautifully stretched, which can show movements, strength and skills, and the feelings are unrestrained.
(2) the accumulation stage of exercise force; The line posture is changeable, attracting but not wanting to stretch and not showing, tactfully and implicitly.
(3) The contour lines of expressions and postures in some action plots are often when the action has started, but it has not been completed. This instantaneous posture will prompt the audience to complete the continuity of action in imagination.
(4) Use the arrangement and combination of lines to create the rhythm and rhythm of the picture.
The repetition of lines is arranged in a visual rhythm, and the changes and differences of lines are similar to produce rhythm. The shapes of lines on the screen are different, and the arrangement density varies according to the visual rhythm, some are bright, some are soft, some are sharp, and some are slow.
Finally, it should be emphasized that the use of lines must be conducive to the expression of the theme, closely related to the content, and can not simply pursue the line effect without the content. We should use it flexibly in photography creation.
