Contemporary artist Qu Yan. 1955 was born in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, and 1985 graduated from the Art Department of Shanxi University, majoring in oil painting. Now living and writing in Beijing. He is currently the director and researcher of the Institute of Urban and Rural Art Construction of Guangdong University of Technology. Qu Yan, as one of the most representative avant-garde artists in contemporary China, has been devoted to the new ideological movement of modern art in China since 1980s, advocating independent artistic spirit. Since 2007, Qu Yan has embarked on an ambitious plan and practice to promote rural revitalization through art. All the legends began in Xu Cun, an ancient village in Taihang Mountain. Qu Yan continued the tradition of ancient philosophers and intellectuals going to the countryside in the last century. As a volunteer, he went deep into Xucun for a long time, starting from picking up garbage in Xucun, influencing and improving the civilized quality of villagers, protecting and restoring traditional houses and buildings, and injecting new cultural elements into Xucun as a way to rebuild China's traditional cultural spirit and belief. With the means of "art promotes rural revitalization" and "art restores the countryside", through several years' efforts, Qu Yan has built Xucun into an international art village and artist creation base with international influence, and has become an important place to study the rural movement in China and restore the countryside by art.
