Banqiao Reservoir is located at the head of Ruhe River, a tributary of Huaihe River, at the foot of Banqiao Baiyun Mountain in Yicheng District, 35 kilometers west of Zhumadian City, Henan Province. It is a large-scale water conservancy project with flood control as its main function and comprehensive benefits of urban water supply, irrigation, aquaculture, hydropower generation and tourism. The construction was designed and organized by the Huaihe River Control Headquarters of Henan Province, and more than 42,000 migrant workers from Fangcheng, Biyang, Queshan and Suiping counties participated in the construction. In the operation of the project, the longitudinal cracks of the dam and the cracks of the water conveyance tunnel were found. Expansion and reinforcement began in February 1956. The main building was upgraded from level 3 to level 2. Cracks in the dam were removed and backfilled. The height of the dam is 3 meters, and the top of the dam is 2020 meters, adding a wave wall with a height of 1.3 meters. The main spillway is equipped with 4-hole 4× 10m gate, with crest elevation of 1 10.34m and maximum flow of 450m3/s; The auxiliary spillway is an open channel on the right, with a width of 300m, weir crest elevation113.94m, and maximum discharge1160m3/s. The water conveyance tunnel is changed from a reinforced concrete lining of 0.3m to a circular hole with a diameter of 3.2m, and a cast iron pipe is buried at the bottom as a water conveyance pipeline for power generation.

After the expansion of the reservoir, the flood control standard has reached the once-in-a-century design and once-in-a-thousand check, with a maximum storage capacity of 492 million cubic meters. The designed irrigation area is 560,000 mu, the installed power generation capacity is 750 kW, and the aquaculture water surface is 30,000 mu. The expansion project was completed in February. 1957. The irrigation area was built in 1958, the hydropower station was built in 1968, and the fish farming expansion project in the reservoir area started at the same time in 1956.
