What kinds of rays are used for industrial flaw detection?
X-ray flaw detection is a method to check the internal defects of weld by using certain rays. There are two kinds of commonly used rays: X-ray and γ-ray. X-rays and γ -rays can penetrate metal materials to varying degrees and have a photosensitive effect on photographic films. Using this characteristic, when the ray passes through the inspected weld, the intensity of the ray falling on the film is different due to the different absorption capacity of the weld defect, and the sensitivity of the film is also different, so that the shape, position and size of the defect can be displayed accurately, reliably and lossless.
X-ray photography takes a short time and is fast. When the detection thickness is less than 30mm, the sensitivity of displaying defects is high, but the equipment is complex and expensive, and the penetration ability is less than γ -ray
Gamma rays can penetrate 300mm thick steel plate, which is convenient for field work and does not need power supply. The girth can be exposed once, but the penetration time is long, which is not suitable for penetration of components smaller than 50 mm
