How many military reconnaissance ships are there in China?
At present, the most advanced 8 15 series (8 15 type and 8 15A type) electronic reconnaissance ships in China have been reported frequently in the New Year. Not only have netizens photographed that the No.7 reconnaissance ship is about to enter the sea trial, but the latest satellite images released by the domestic military forum show that the 10 8 15 series reconnaissance ship under construction in the dock is about to be launched. 8 15 series electronic reconnaissance ships are also the main reconnaissance ships of China Navy. There are 1 8 15 85 1 and 5 8 15A 852-856 in active service. According to public reports, in the past two years, these electronic reconnaissance ships have appeared in the waters near Alaska, the northern Indian Ocean and the Queensland coast of Australia.
The seventh 8 15 series electronic reconnaissance ship, ship number 857, is undergoing sea trial.

China Navy's 8 15 series reconnaissance ships have distinctive names, all of which are "stars". Specifically: 8 15 type 85 1 Polaris ship; 8 15A 852 Venus ship, 853 Uranus ship, 854 Sirius ship, 855 highest day star ship and 856 Kaiyang star ship. Moreover, from the first 85 1 Polaris ship, the China Navy reconnaissance ship has the ability to track ballistic missiles. Polaris should be able to effectively track and monitor short-range ballistic missiles with a range of 1000 km.
In addition to the flight target tracking capability, Polaris also has a complete ship-to-aircraft communication relay capability and full-spectrum electronic detection capability. Moreover, the maximum displacement of the ship is about 6000 tons. You know, in 1999, the China Navy's largest main destroyer, Shenzhen 05 1B, had a normal displacement of only 6100t. It can be seen that the navy has high hopes for the only treasure of the 8 15 reconnaissance ship. Polaris ship has also experienced the modernization process of nearly 10 years in this century.

Since 2009, China Navy has continuously received five 8 15A electronic reconnaissance ships. At present, a ***6 8 15 series reconnaissance ship constitutes the most powerful electronic reconnaissance fleet of navies all over the world. The important task of 8 15A electronic reconnaissance ship is to collect radar and communication signals at ordinary times, so as to accumulate for corresponding electromagnetic countermeasures, decipher enemy encrypted signals and explore the law of enemy communication frequency bands, and prepare for corresponding countermeasures and deciphering.
In addition, the 8 15A reconnaissance ship has a special "skill" that some navies are quite taboo. Based on the technology of Type 366 over-the-horizon radar, China Navy re-developed an active and passive search radar, which was widely installed on 054A frigates and 052 series destroyers. The 8 15A electronic reconnaissance ship equipped with this radar has passively detected the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the US Navy 700 kilometers away.

As we all know, the typical air defense range of the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier strike group is 700 kilometers. This means that the 8 15A reconnaissance ship can detect and locate it outside its air defense circle. Equipped with over-the-horizon active and passive search radar, it is also a major improvement of 8 15A compared with 8 15 reconnaissance ship.
The shipborne electronic reconnaissance system of 8 15A electronic reconnaissance ship is more perfect than the previous model, and the shipborne satellite communication system is more systematic, which provides technical and equipment support for this type of reconnaissance ship to perform global strategic and tactical electronic reconnaissance tasks.
The over-the-horizon search radar of 8 15A reconnaissance ship has been improved since the latest service of Kaiyang Star Ship in June last year.
Even if there are 6 8 15 series reconnaissance ships in service now, the number that can be dispatched at any time is about 2, and it is already possible to observe key sea areas such as the western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean at the same time. Then in the future, after all the 10 (possibly more) reconnaissance ships of the China Navy are in place, there will be four or more ships ready for use, which can make necessary observations on more specific sea areas such as the South China Sea, the Western Pacific Ocean, the North Indian Ocean and the east coast of Africa.
