Yu Liwei's growing experience.
His first impression of China came from People's Pictorial, which his parents had been subscribing to. It was a picture with high color saturation, a picture of a bumper harvest and a spectacular picture of the motherland ... He said: "My parents often took me back to Guangzhou to see my friends, but when I went there in the 1970s, I saw a motherland different from that in Pictorial. There is an obvious gap. I was often curious about the difference between the two places. Why does the mainland buy meal tickets? Why did 1 1 turn off the lights ... but my parents have been patiently explaining the reasons to me. " This may have planted the seeds in his mind that he hopes to express and think about the theme of each film.
In fact, Hong Kong has developed from a small fishing village with a population of 2,000 to a metropolis with a population of 7 million. There are no pure Hong Kong people, only relatively pure ones. Many people fled from various places and stayed here from generation to generation. Therefore, every generation will have a bad feeling about their identity, which involves many complicated and distorted feelings. They can't wait to give themselves a place because they are afraid of going with the flow.
1992, Yu Liwei, who worked in an advertising company for three or four years, decided to give up his lifestyle at that time. He felt that under such a system, he could not express what he needed. So he went to Belgium with only 20,000 yuan, intending to apply for INSAS. He said, "I told myself that I wouldn't buy a return ticket. I have to get into this school. This is the only chance to change my life. " . I waited 1 for many months in Belgium, and I was admitted after all kinds of complicated exams. Regarding why he chose photography as his major at that time, Yu Liwei said, "At that time, I felt that directors could not be trained, but it was more affordable to learn a technology. And I always feel that I have the ability to control photography. "
After studying in Belgium for three years, Yu Liwei, who graduated from 1994, gave up the opportunity to stay in Belgium and resolutely chose to return to Hong Kong for film development.
In this way, from a Hong Kong person who looks at Hong Kong and is curious about his identity to a filmmaker who can express himself on the stage, Yu Liwei has been looking for an outlet to express his desire. He admitted that his understanding and love of mainland culture came from the education of left-wing parents. "I believe that Hong Kong culture and the mainland are integrated. From this perspective, I am the director of China first, and then the director of Hong Kong. "
