Interview with Mark mahaney

Reporter: What is your photography style?

I like a clean, concise and honest style. I usually shoot in natural light, and I like to shoot portraits in the environment very much, because it can show the real life of the subject.

Reporter: Why did you choose photography as your career?

My father is a pilot. He chose this career because he can combine work with hobbies. His views influenced me. I also choose photography because it is a job I love, and it is absolutely worthwhile to be able to do what I like.

Reporter: Who is your favorite artist?

Joseph beuys is my favorite artist. His works involve many artistic fields and creatively use many media. He engaged in artistic creation with a very scientific and logical attitude. Many of his works are related to people's lives and are comments from a political/cultural perspective. I admire such an artist. His works not only contain beauty, but also depth, which is much more difficult than creating works with only aesthetic feeling.

Reporter: Who is your favorite photographer?

I don't have a favorite photographer, but those pioneers who took color photos with large-format cameras had a great influence on me. Joel Sternfield and Roy Ethridge are my favorites.

Reporter: Which magazines do you take photos for, which one do you like best and which magazine do you want to cooperate with most?

Seeds, RES, TOKION, nylon. These are the magazines I have worked in recently, among which Tokion is my favorite. On the one hand, I have always liked their topics, on the other hand, their designs are generous and their photos are of high quality. I hope to work for Color magazine, The New York Times magazine, Good magazine and Big magazine.

Reporter: What is the most valuable experience you have gained from photography?

My experience is that honesty can make you go further. Besides, I also know that sometimes you may have to accept some shooting tasks that are not well paid, because if this task can make you take good photos to enrich your portfolio, it is also worthwhile.

Reporter: What is your photography style?

I think my photos are traditional, but they are also experimental. In my opinion, there is an interesting contrast between the external form (composition, Yong Guang) and the internal form (theme) of photography. Recently, I am trying to use dramatic and classic light for documentary photography. The form of the photo is beautiful, but at the same time it is not posing. It is very interesting to learn from each other between news photography and classic portraits.

Reporter: Why did you choose photography as your career?

The influence of photography on me is formed over time, and I don't have a precise time to choose photography. My father is also a photographer. I remember that he often traveled around the world and brought back his works. So I am very familiar with the life of a photographer. When I was in the sixth grade, the school opened an elective course. A good friend of mine, whose father is also a photographer, took this course because we found it interesting. I always seem to have a sense of art and talent in the field of photography. I have been studying this course since I graduated from high school. Then I went to the Rhode Island School of Design and Art, where I got a bachelor's degree in photography. I love photography and am full of creative passion. Many people think that I chose this career because my father is a photographer. Because my father paved the road, I will walk more easily. But this is not the case. Starting your own business is not that simple. Although there are some convenient conditions, but ultimately depends on their own wisdom.

Reporter: Who is your favorite artist?

It's hard to say that I particularly like or always admire an artist. There are many photographers and painters I like very much. But if it really affects my creative style, I think the painter has a greater influence on me. It is rare to read a magazine and say, "I wish I could take pictures like this." Generally speaking, annie leibovitz and irving penn will make me feel this way. But when I look at some paintings and old photos (eternal classics and exquisite light), I often send out such feelings. I often get inspiration from old photos. Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Sargent and odd nerdrum also inspired me a lot.

Reporter: Who is your favorite photographer?

As mentioned above, my favorite photographers are annie leibovitz and irving penn. Although they are two portrait photographers with completely different styles. I like the way Annie uses all the light, and her handling of the environment and people's postures. She has the greatest influence on me. In my opinion, Owen is the owner of the studio. Of course, my father had a great influence on me. He is an excellent teacher. Without him, I wouldn't be engaged in this profession.

Which magazines do you take photos for, which one do you like best and which magazine do you want to cooperate with most?

At present, my favorite magazine is Vanity Fair, and their photos and words are excellent. I often watch vogue and W, and I also go to the newsstand once a month to browse the new magazines and how the international editions of these magazines use photos. If something can inspire me, I will buy it. But if I set running a magazine as my work goal now, I think Vanity Fair with the best portrait style (largely because of Anne) is also suitable for me.

Reporter: What is the most valuable experience you have gained from photography?

At work, we can learn a lot of experience every day. For me, a newcomer who just started my career, there is still a lot to go. I think it is a key to be kind to others, especially those who work with me. If you are a moody freak to your assistant and team, you can't win their trust. If you respect others, you will get their selfless help in turn. In addition, it is also important to make full preparations and start thinking ahead of time. Be sure to have two sets of plans and spare equipment, because there are always some unexpected things in shooting.

Mainly engaged in documentary photography, attaches great importance to the color, lines and texture of the picture.

Why did you choose photography as your career?

I can't find myself when I do other jobs. I am deeply immersed in the pleasure of pressing the shutter. In addition, I like the creative color of photography, which makes you keep thinking about things.

What is your biggest challenge?

Anticipate the coming difficulties and try to solve them, not making trouble but solving them.

Reporter: Who is your favorite photographer?

I don't like to imitate people and people when I create. I wish I were myself. But I like Huo's photography style, because his works bring people a new way of watching. He observes our daily life from a unique and interesting angle. I also like the works of photographers such as irving penn, Paul Roovers and Salman. When I saw their works, I had an inexplicable feeling, as if I had been taken to the world beyond photos.

Reporter: Which magazines do you take photos for, which one do you like best and which magazine do you want to cooperate with most?

I hope to cooperate with W and National Geographic magazine.

What valuable experience have you gained from photography?

Stay calm. People are easily excited when problems arise, and staying calm at this time will bring you many differences.
