What is a montage?
As a basic feature of film and television art, "montage" plays an extremely important role in film and television creation. Some people call it "film-the art of montage". The so-called "film language" is basically "montage language". Therefore, learning, mastering and using montage has become a compulsory course and basic skill for film and television directors, photographers, cameramen and editors. Montage is produced by lens assembly, completed in the editing stage and runs through the whole process of editing work. In a sense, montage is synonymous with film and television editing skills and techniques. Therefore, montage has a more direct, collective and important special significance for editing and editing, which must be deeply understood, accurately grasped and skillfully used.
It is quite appropriate and kind for film artists to borrow the term "montage" to compare, express and explain the meaning of focus plane's group. In film production, according to the theme and plot of the script and the film, many shots (pictures) are made respectively. Then, according to the original creative thinking, these different shots (pictures) are organically and artistically combined and edited together to produce coherence, contrast, association, contrast, suspense and various rhythms, thus forming a complete film that reflects life, expresses themes and is understood by the general audience. The unique forms and expressions of these films are collectively called montage.
Montage comes from people's daily life experience. When people look at everything around them with their eyes, they always focus on different spatial ranges-vast or narrow, huge or subtle, distant or nearby. Because people are always changing their viewpoints: up, down, left, right, far, near, front and back, this visual experience of different spatial ranges has been going on and continuing. For example, when we watch a concert, the audience's attention will not feel and appreciate the rhythm of the whole concert from the beginning to the end of the whole stage in a fixed space. Instead, focus on the whole stage scene for a while, on a local corner of the stage for a while, and on a single actor for a while, which depends entirely on the development of the plot and the audience's willingness to appreciate. This phenomenon is that people unconsciously "montage" everything performed on the stage in their own way. That is to say, in people's vision, "montage" is used intentionally or unintentionally almost all the time. The world is full of wonders, and people's eyes observe everything around them, just like a camera, taking pictures of people and things around them. What the eyes observe is fed back to the brain, and the brain's thinking judges, analyzes, selects and refines everyone and objective things, thus producing correct evaluation and appropriate disposal of objective things. For example, when a fashion designer faces a piece of cloth, many styles of clothes will come to his mind. According to the situation of this cloth, he will use scissors to complete his own design of clothes. This shows that when people do something, there will always be montage thinking or images directly related to it in their minds. The montage principle of film and television is based on the laws and experiences of people observing things in their daily lives. Montage is actually a reflection of people's thinking activities of observing and understanding things in film and television. What is reflected in this is vision, emotion, art, not philosophy. The montage of film and television is not only visual intuition, but also its internal "thinking" mode and law. Screenwriters, directors, photographers, photojournalists, editors and editors of film and television choose, refine, transform and combine through observing and understanding life phenomena, thus creating new meanings and realizing artistic re-creation.
To say that montage comes from life means that montage is the reflection of people's audio-visual feelings and thinking activities (such as synthesis, analysis, association, memory, imagination and dreams) in movies, not that life can directly "produce" montage. In fact, montage is "produced" by film creators (mainly directors, photographers and editors) who edit, arrange and combine focus plane, which is the basic task and content of editing. In other words, montage is the product of editing practice. Early films were only original records of daily life and direct photography of stage programs. Without changing the position of the camera, the fixed panoramic lens is used to shoot scenes, and then these scenes are glued together to form a movie projection. This is just a juggling, not to mention art, not to mention montage. Later, with the development and progress of film production, after many early filmmakers' continuous experiments, explorations and time, they began to adopt the method of split shots, mastered the means of multi-viewpoint and multi-space, and finally got rid of the limitations of single viewpoint and stage time and space. They found and created the principles, methods and techniques of montage in the discussion and summary of focus plane's practical experience in editing, arrangement and combination (editing), which made the film obtain its own unique expression method.
Montage has profound meaning, wide application and magical function, which plays an extremely important role in film and television art creation. Montage has its unique characteristics and wonderful mystery, but it is not mysterious or mysterious, and has its actual connotation and laws to follow. In a word: montage is a unique image thinking mode in film and television art, and montage thinking is a unique artistic expression method in film and television art; Montage language is the most important editing skill in film and television art; Montage technique (montage editing) is a unique artistic theory system of film and television art; Montage theory is the most important element of film and television aesthetics and the most important feature of forming a hard reality. This is the basic content and significance of montage. Montage is not everything in film and television art, but it is the most important part in film and television art. It can be said that if we really know and understand montage, we can master the core and soul of film and television art.
