It opened in 2009 and held a wildlife photography exhibition, which was divided into three parts: birds, insects and African wildlife, and became a grand gathering for photographers in Beijing.

The museum integrates animal specimen collection and display, popularization and education of popular science knowledge, and description and cataloging of biodiversity. It is a professional museum representing the national level, and a national academic institution integrating animal system and evolution research, animal specimen collection and popularization of animal science knowledge. It consists of two parts: animal specimen museum and specimen exhibition hall.
