Tips for backlight shooting

When the light source (such as the sun) is behind the subject, this situation is the backlight environment. So what should I do in this situation? Many novice photographers are at a loss, especially when taking portraits. Below, the author will introduce three simple and easy-to-use coping methods.

1, directly increase the overall exposure.

If you use semi-automatic mode (such as aperture priority), you can increase exposure compensation. Depending on the degree of backlight, sometimes we need to add two or more levels to correctly expose the subject, but the background will be completely overexposed. Paying attention to this is also a skill to take high-value photos.

Step 2 fill the light with a flash

When shooting in backlight, we can shoot the background with correct exposure, and then the foreground will be underexposed and become very dark. In this case, as long as the flash is turned on and the foreground is full of light, the whole photo will have a normal' exposure'. However, when using this technique, we should carefully control the output of the flash, and supplement the light slightly instead of the main light source to avoid the characters being photographed like a paste.

3. Take artistic silhouette photos

The prospect is underexposed? Just make a silhouette! Sometimes the above methods of 1 and 2 don't work. We can try to shoot the outline of the silhouette, which may be more artistic. At this time, only the background needs to be exposed correctly, and the foreground does not fill the light, and the beautiful silhouette effect will come out.

Question: Can I use post-software to remedy photos?

The answer is yes! If your camera can shoot Raw format, there will be more room for later operation. Just add light to the dark part of the photo with Camera Raw in Photoshop, but pay attention to the noise will increase, so it is best to expose it normally when shooting!
