Has Magnum Global Exhibition Director Shenzhen interpreted the 70-year-old photography museum?
On the morning of September 5th, as one of the activities of the Video Festival, the second lecture of "Magnum and Me" was held in Shenzhen Central Book City. Andrea Holzherr, global exhibition director and senior photo editor of Magnum, flew to Shenzhen from Paris to personally interpret the story behind Magnum's 70-year glory, and had an in-depth dialogue with famous documentary photographer Yang Yankang. The International City Video Festival 20 14 was founded in Shenzhen, sponsored by Dagan Art Institute and funded by Shenzhen Futian Special Fund for Publicity, Culture and Sports. 20 17 international city video festival continues to take "I am the other" as the theme, bringing theme units, public units and photography units. Previously, as one of the activities of the photography unit, "Focusing and Out of Focus-Retrospect Exhibition of robert capa Images" was opened in Shenzhen University Art Museum on August 14, which is the first time in China to comprehensively review the special exhibition of robert capa, the core founder of Magnum and "the greatest war photographer in the world". This lecture is a concurrent activity of the exhibition.
In the lecture, Andrea reviewed the history of Magnum since it was founded in new york in 1947. Magnum is the world's first photography cooperation organization owned and operated by photographer * * *, and its name comes from robert capa's favorite champagne. Magnum gives the photographer the freedom to create completely independently, and it is up to the photographer to decide from the choice of shooting theme and time to the editing right and copyright ownership of the work. This is also the basis for Magnum to be different from other photography institutions and achieve great success.
In the early days, Magnum focused on news and documentary photography. Since World War II, Magnum photographers have traveled all over the world and recorded almost all the moments of drastic changes, but they did not praise heroes, but reflected the suffering of ordinary people. From the independent founding of the country by Israel and the Soviet Union behind the Iron Curtain, to the Cuban Revolutionary War, the US anti-Vietnam War March, the Gulf War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the Iraq War and the September 1 1 incident, magnum photographers recorded everything like the eyes of the world, such as steve mccurry, Elliot Ovett and marc riboud. So looking back at Magnum's history is like looking back at the world history after World War II.
Andrea introduced that the Magnum Foundation was formally established on 20 10 to better protect and organize Magnum's huge works and databases and provide creative support for young photographers. In 20 17, Magnum celebrated its 70th anniversary. At the end of May, Magnum Manifesto was exhibited at new york International Photography Center (ICP), which comprehensively reviewed Magnum's history and classic works.
"People always ask, what is magnum? I think magnum is photography. " Andrea concluded at the end of the lecture.
The photography team of the video festival is excellent. After the collection of "City and Me" was launched, Andrea had an in-depth dialogue with Teacher Yang Yankang and accepted questions from the audience. Regarding the criteria for becoming a magnum photographer, she said that there are two key points: first, the photographer must "be himself" and have a unique style and visual expression; Secondly, we should embrace and watch the world with an open mind and always be enthusiastic about the exploration of photography. She said, "There is no so-called' magnum style' in this world, because magnum is always looking for innovative photographers and different perspectives. Only in this way can Magnum continue to go on. "
With the beginning of a series of activities, the colorful photography unit of the International Urban Image Festival is about to reach its climax.
Chen Dong, executive director of the International City Film Festival, said that Chien-Chi Chang, the only China photographer of Menglong, will also give a lecture in Shenzhen on September 27th. The second phase of "Different Vision-Magnum Photography Practice Workshop" has also been opened for registration, and will be held in Shenzhen from June 9, 65438/KLOC-0 to October 3, 65438/KLOC-0. In addition, the "Live Lab" resident laboratory project specially planned to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Magnum has also arrived in Shenzhen, and will be officially opened in the atrium of Vientiane Tiandi on June 65438+1October 65438+April 29. Magnum photographers Christopher Anderson and Alex Majoli will work in Shenzhen for 65,438+04 days, and their works will be produced, edited and displayed in the resident laboratory. In the process, you can make an appointment to visit and expose the creative process of the omnipotent master in the capital. The host cities of the project also include London and Paris, and Shenzhen is the only host city in Asia.
