"Donkey Gets Water" is a comedy film written and directed by Zhou Shen and Liu Lu, starring Ren Suxi, Dali, Liu Shuiliang and others. It was released in mainland China on October 28, 2016.

The film is adapted from the drama of the same name by Zhou Shen and Liu Lu. It tells the story of a remote school during the Republic of China when teachers falsely reported a donkey as a teacher to receive their salary. At the 14th Guangzhou University Student Film Festival on December 2, 2017, the movie "Donkey Gets Water" was selected as the most popular movie among college students.

Creative background: In early 2009, Zhou Shen and his friends talked about a story while having dinner: In a place where water was scarce, a school raised a donkey to carry water, but no one was willing to raise the donkey. So the principal falsely reported the donkey as a teacher named "Lv Deshui" and used the salary of "Teacher Lu Deshui" to raise the donkey.

When the superior leaders came to inspect and wanted to see Teacher Lu, everyone could only make up various excuses. It was just a casual chat during the dinner. Zhou Shen realized that this was a good story subject, so he discussed it with his creative partner Liu Lu that day and decided to expand it into a movie outline. In 2010, Zhou Shen completed the text of the film script "The Donkey Gets Water" and applied for the text copyright.

In 2011, a short film called "The Donkey Gets Water" appeared on the Internet. The short film borrowed part of the script, but did not capture the essence. This made Zhou Shen realize that he must immediately Stand up the real "Donkey Gets Water". However, compared to making a movie, arranging a play is obviously much faster. In 2012, Zhou Shen and Liu Lu, both professional theater directors, started adapting "The Donkey Gets Water" into a drama script.
