The soil forest in Datong, Shanxi, known as the "Devil City", has uncanny landforms and is a paradise for photographers

Datong Earth Forest, also known as "Shibangou", is located in Duzhuang Township, Datong County, Datong City, Shanxi Province, on the edge of the Datong Basin on the banks of the Sangqian River. It is about 1 kilometer long from east to west and 3 kilometers long from north to south. It is a unique beauty that has been hidden for many years and few people know about it.

As the name suggests, soil forests are columnar mounds formed layer by layer from calcified soil deposited over many years. Because there are many columnar mounds, a forest is formed. The earth forest is due to repeated erosion by rivers, invasion and weathering by sandstorms and strong winds over thousands of years, forming various landforms such as earth platforms, earth pillars, earth cliffs, earth ridges and other strange and varied shapes and heights. It is also the only strange earth forest in northwest China, known as the "Devil City".

Looking straight into the distance, you can see that there is no soil forest at all, no different from the vast flat bottom of the grassland. Because the Datong earth forest is below the horizon, only in this environment can it be slowly eroded and weathered into the current so-called "earth forest" landform.

Standing on the edge of the Datong Earth Forest and looking around, it looks like stone pillars drilled out of the soil. They are densely packed, very mysterious and majestic. Some are unique, some are clusters of stone pillars, some are stone walls, and some are densely packed and winding streams with a ravine texture, which is very artistic.

Standing deep in the earth forest of Datong, I have an immersive feeling of being in the wilderness and ancient times. Looking around, there is no green life, and everything in front of me is yellow. Looking up, some of the earth pillars and lonely peaks are tall and straight, reaching into the sky; some are like graceful girls, beautiful and tall; and some are more like mighty warriors, guarding this paradise with their heads held high.

In the southwest corner of Datong Earth Forest, there is a pond and reed marsh. Standing by the earth forest, you can see the spectacular scenery of the setting sun and its reflection in the water of the earth forest. Datong Tulin is truly a unique style of majestic and uncanny craftsmanship, and has become a creative destination for many photography enthusiasts.
